CAPITAL PARADE
(Continued from page 2)
my hope that the state depart
ments of the Oregon government
will be able to work at their ful
lest efficiency. The State Indus
tdial Accident Commission has
kept Oregon's premium rates low
er than those of comparable stat
es and the cost of administration
now is the lowest among sim
ilar agencies of the entire nation.
Time lag on cla'ms processing
has been cut down the past year
and disposition of claims appeal
ed to the commission has been
speeded up with increased ef
ficiency." Farm Crop Prices
Down 4 in 1957;
Livestock Up T,
re.
More produce worth less money--that
was the picture facing
Oregon farmers as they harvest
ed their 1957 crops, according to
Mrs Elvera Horrell, extension ag
ricultural economist at the Ore
gon state college. Better livestock
prices during the year came to
the rescue, however, and helped
the state's farmers fare about as
well as the year before.
U S department of agriculture
reports show Oregon farm prices
last year averaged somewhat a
bove 1956, even though prices
were lower at the end of the
year than at the start, Mrs Hor
rell found. Crop prices averaged
4 per cent lower than 'n 1956
and it was up to livestock prices
chalking up a 7 per cent gain to
account for the higher average.
But prices paid by farmers,
nationally, for production items
rose nearly 4 per cent during the
year to an all-time high, Mrs
Horrell said. Farmers' buying
power, as expressed in the nat
ional par'ty ratio--the relation
ship between prices received and
prices paid farmers--averaged 82
for the year, the same as in 1956.
Oregon's crop harvest in 1957
was good due to excellent grow-
ing conditions and ideal harvest
it;;; weather. Crop tonnage, when
the final count was made, top
ped 1956 production by 7 per
cent. But Mrs Horrell calculated
that the farm value of these
crops fell short of 1936 by a like
amount.
Looking at 1957 crops, group by
group, Mrs Horrell found that the
state produced more field crops,
and tree fruits and nuts but less
seed crops and vegetables than
a year earlier. Only the tree
fruits and nuts group was val
ued higher than in 1956 as in
creases in the value of apples,
cherries, filberts, and walnuts
more than offset lowered values
on pears, peaches, and prunes.
Value of vegetable crops re
mained about the same in 1957
as in 1956, with fresh market veg
etables down a trifle and pro
cessing vegetables a little higher.
Seed crops were spotty and aver
aged about a fifth lower. Berry
values skklded 12 percent. Field
crop values, which account for
about three-fifths of the crop val
ue in the state, were off 88 percent.

Some dishes are sheer delight and comfort because they can
be offered practically any time, to anybody. Apple Sauce Frenchies
are of that happy company.
You can use them as a robust dish for breakfast. You can serve
them for supper, for informal guest luncheon, as a fun snack for
late evening, as a mid-afternoon treat for hungry youngsters. And
every time they'll be relished as good simple food always is.
For the between-slices filling and topping for these Frenchies,
ready-prepared apple sauce is used the kind you buy in cans and
jars in any grocery store. Stir the spices and butter into the
canned apple sauce and heat until there is a warm cinnamony
aroma. Then serve it quickly in a bowl, letting each one spoon the
apple sauce as lavishly as he will for his own "sandwich."
APrLE SAUCE FRENCHIES
2 cups canned apple sauce
Va teaspoon cinnamon
i teaspoon nutmeg
1 tablespoon butter
8 slices white bread
Combine apple sauce, spices and butter; heat. Beat eggs, add milk
and salt. Dip bread slices in e. mixture; brown on both sides in
butter or margarine. Serve hot apple sauce mixture between each
two i licej of French toast. If desired, garnish top with spoonful of
apple sauce. Makes 4 servings.
