Returning to our cramming ses
sions again was real difficult
following the Thanksgiving va
cation. Anticipation is now rising over
the basketball season for 1957
58. The first chance to see the
boys in action will be at the Jam
boree in Umatilla on Wednesday
night, Dec. 4. The regular game
schedule will be picked up on
Friday, Dec. 6 at St. Joseph in
Pendleton and again Saturday
night, Dec. 7 at Arlington. The
following week will see two
games at Condon. One of these
games on Friday, Dec. 13 will be
against Sisters and will be play
ed at Condon and the following
night we will play Culver and
again on the Condon floor.
Participation points thus far In
to the year are: Seniors 124; Juni
ors 121; Sophomores 110; Fresh
men 119. With the start of the
basketball games there will be
many more possibilities for gain
ing points and probably many
changes in positions.
Christmas vacation is to be a
little confusing this year since
we will be dismissed at 2:30 on
Dec. 20 and then return to our
classes for Dec. 30 and 31. We will
be free on New Years and then
resume classes again for Thurs
day and Friday Jan. 2 and 3.

the music department of the
Mothers Club Has
Christmas Party
Members of the Young Moth
er's club ushered in the Yuletide
season with their annual Christ
mas party at the home of Mrs.
Victor Kreimeyer on Monday,
Dec. 2. Fourteen members were
present, also four guests, Mrs.
Merlin Zler, Mrs. Ralph Richmond,
Mrs. Rod Murray and Mrs. Harry
Bongers, who are prospective
members.
Each member brought home
made cookies and candies for
Heppner high school will be the
feature of the evening of Dec. 18.
Both the chorus and the band
will present numbers featuring
the Christmas theme. '
The grade school Christmas
concert will be given Dec. 17 in
the multi-purpose room. There
will be a matinee program feat
uring grades 1-3 at 1:15 in the
afternoon. The program for grades
4-8 will be given at 8 p.m. the
same day.

distribution to the elderly pa
tients of the Morrow county Pio
neer Memorial hospital. The gifts
were delivered to the patients on
Dec. 3 by the Eluta CamDflre
Girls, a group sponsored by the
Young Mothers club. Club mem
bers also wrote letters to these
elderly patients which will be
mailed to them later in Decem
ber. Plans were made for a progres
sive dinner with the members'
husbands, to take place in Janu
ary. Mrs. Wallace Wolff is the
chairman of the planning com
mittee. The last course of the
dinner will be served at the home
of Mrs. Bob Jones where they
; will be shown the pictures taken
by the Joneses in Germany.
Mrs. Wallace Wolff was also
in charge of the program for the
Christmas party which consist
ed of carol singing with impromp
tu tableaus by the members. Mrs.
Victor Kreimeyer was accompan
ist and Mrs. Norman Peters led
hte singing.
Refreshments were served by
the hostesses, Mrs. Kreimeyer and
Mrs. Peters.

Heppner Couple
Married Recently
Mrs. Kathleen Kononen and
Clarence Cox announce their
marriage at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. John Laurer at Friday Har
bor, Wash., at 6 p.m. Nov. 12. Mr.
and Mrs. Laurer attended the
couple.
Following the ceremony a re
ception was held for the wedding
party at the American Legion
club. Mrs. Cox will continue to
make her home in Heppner while
Mr. Cox is assigned to construc
tion at Friday Harbor.
Carnation Club Has
Birthday Party
The Carnation club held its
regular meeting at the home of
Mrs. Maxlne Gray.
This was the birthday party and
gifts were drawn from the box
by tnose having birthday In Sep
tember, October and November.
A nominating committee was
appointed for the new officers for
the coming year.
Refreshments of birthday cake
and coffee was served by Mrs.
Martha King, Mrs. Marv Brvant
and the hostess.
Umatilla Wins
Ball Jamboree

Umatilla was winner of the
Girls' Volleyball jamboree held
here Monday night of last week.
Eight schools participated. The
final game was close, with the
score ending 15-14. Irrigon was
winner of third place, winning
over Boardman, 10-8. Other
schools taking part were Stan
field, Hermiston, Lexington and
Heppner.
New rules were used this year
similar to boys rules, In which
10 minute games were played,
with two minutes overtime in case
of a tie. With the old rule eight
minute games were played or 15
points. The most exciting game
of the evening was the fourth
game which was between lone
and Boardman. At the end of the
playing time the score was 15
15. with lone coming out winner
1915 after the overtime.
Gwen Randall of Umatilla was
high scorer with 17 points. Janet
Henderson, Irrigon, was second,
with 15 points and Grace Mc
Cabe, lone, third with 13 points.
High scorers from Boardman were
Barbara Gantenbein, Wanda For
thman and Mona Taylor, each
scoring seven points.
Suitable mementos will be sent
to top teams.
Between games a tumbling act
was presented by lone, a fire bat
on number by Stanfield, and a
drill team from Irrigon perform
ed. There were about 200 people
present. First game started at 7
p.m. Mrs. LaVern Partlow was
main referee of the jamboree.

At Blakney Home
' The Duplicate Bridge club was
entertained Sunday evening by
Mr. and Mrs. Philip Blakney at
their home.
Present were Mr. and Mrs. La

ELUTA CAMPFIRE GIRLS
At the last few meetings we
have been practicing for our
Mothers Tea to be held Dec. 10 at
our guardian's home.
We plan on taking cookies and
singing Christmas carols at the
hospital December 3.

Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kuhn have re
turned from a three week trip to
Arizona and California. They vis
ited their son and daughter-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kuhn Jr.,
in Tuscon, and at the home of
Mrs. Kuhn's parents, Mr. and Mrs.
J. F. Wootan in Wilcox, Ariz. In
Ontario, Calif., they visited at the
home of Kuhn's brother and sister-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Kuhn.
Mr. and Mrs. Nels Kristensen
returned home last week from a
two week trip to Lamore, Calif.,
where they visited at the home of
Mrs. Kristensen's brother-in-law
and sister, Mr. and Mrs. W. J.
Thomas. While there Mr. and Mrs.
Thomas celebrated their golden
wedding anniversary. On their re
turn trip the Kristensens stopped
in Davis, Calif., to visit at the
home of their niece, Mr.'and Mrs.
Max Vannoy, former residents
here.
Little Terry Fortner, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fortner of
Portland, visited her grandpar
ents, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Fortner.
Other recent visitors at the Fort
ner home were their daughter,
Mrs. Bruce Lindsay and children
Sherry, Jimmie and Johnny of
Heppner.

joyed Thanksgiving dinner eith
er at home, or went out of town
visiting relatives and friends. Mr.
and Mrs. Elmer Messenger left
the first of the week to spend the
holidays at the home of Messen
ger's son-in-law and daughter,
Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Willetts.
Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Carpenter
and daughter Alberta went to Se
attle to spend the week with
their sons and daughters-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Carpenter
and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Carpenter.
Dinner guests at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Claud Coats Thanks
giving were Coats' nephew, Mr.
and Mrs. Leon Chapin and child
ren David and Judy, Pendleton;
his brother, Jess Coats Hardman;
and Mrs. Coats' sister Mrs. Zearl
Gillespie.
Louis Hamilton and daughter,
Mrs. Louis Crockett, Bellingham,
Wash., visited last week at the
home of Hamilton's nephew, Mr.
and Mrs. Cecil Hamilton.
Mr. and Mrs. John Baldlno and
daughter Gloria, Spokane, spent
the holidays with Mrs. Baldlno's
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter
Hayes. Thanksgiving day they all,
accompanied by Mr. and Mrs.
Melvin Hayes of Arlington, went
to Heppner to have dinner at the
home of Mrs. Hayes' brother-in-law
and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Al
Lovgren.
Mr. and Mrs. Bobbie Stewart
went to Estacada to spend the
holiday weekend at the home of
Mrs. Stewart's parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Oscar Veelle, Sr.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Marlow
went to La Grande where they
were dinner guests at the home
of Mrs. Marlow's father and step
mother, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Carroll.
