County Agent News . .
By N. C Anderson
Recently the Morrow County
Livestock Growers Association
contributed $50 to the Oregon
Cattlemen's Association as their
shc re of contribution collected in
tinancing of a petition for crea
tion of an Oregon Beef Commis
sion. This petition asks the state
department of agriculture to con
duct hearings and a vote on the
proposed self help program. The
beef commission would provide a
maximum tax collection of 10
cents per head on cattle collected
at the time of state brand inspec
tion of animals sold for Inter
state movement or for slaughter,
The petition stipulates that sci
entific research to discover and
develop the commercial value of
beef be limited to problems as
sociated with market; it also re
quests that powers of the com
mission which would consist of
7 commissioners would study leg
islation limited to marketing
problems. The commission studies
would include tariffs, duties, re
ciprocal trade agreements, im
port duties, freight rates and oth
er matters that affect the mark
eting of beef. The commission
would be composed of one hand
ler two dairymen and four cattle
men. Morrow county cattlemen
are urged to acquaint them
selves with the nature of the
beef commission so that they
might be better informed to vote
on this when the referendum is
held.

strong. The chances for a good
lamb crop can be boosted by
having ewes gaining in condi
tion at the time rams are turned
in with them. Ewes are frequent
ly too fat at breeding time. It's a ,
good practice to put over-conditioned
ewes on dry feed or poor
feed for a time and then return!
them to good feed. The loss ini
condition followed by a gaining'
period results in a high lamb
percentage. With increasing inci-
dence of internal parasite it
would be a good idea to treats
ewes with two ounces of liquid
phenothyozene prior to flushing
as a precaution against these
pests. It is also well to treat rams
before turning them with ewes.
