Boardman Garden Club Holds Sister Party

The annual Sandflower Slater
party of the Boardman Garden
club was held Monday night at
the home of Mrs. Arthur Allen,
with Mrs. Russell Miller as co
hostess. There were 19 members
present and visitors were Mrs.
Don Downey, Mrs. Bill Califf and
Mrs. Effie Miller. Gifts were ex
changed and names drawn for
next year. Roll call was answered
by trying to guess the name of
each Sandflower sister. Mrs. Rus
sell Miller and Mrs. Arthur Allen
were selected as delegate and
alternate to attend the state con
vention to be held at Coos Bay
June 24.
The annual membership tea
of the Boardman Tillicum Junior
Women's club was held Tuesday,
June 4 at the Saddle Room of The
Hitchin' Post cafe at 8 p.m. With
Mrs. Joe Tatone, president, presid
ing, the meeting opened with
singing "Oregon, My Oregon,"
and the salute to the flag.
Guest speakers were Mrs. Fred
C. (Rosalind) Cast, financial sec
retary of the Oregon Federation
of Women's clubs and Extension
committee chairman, of Portland,
and Mrs. Carl (Grace) Johnson,
past 4th district president, of
Weston.
Mrs. Cast spoke on the phases
of club work, the projects under
taken by the state, such as the
Penny Art fund, Conservation of
Natural Resources, Sadie Orr Dun
bar Nursing Education project,
Scholarship Loan Fellowship fund
under which nine Pan-American
students have studied in Oregon,
and four Oregon girls in Pan-
America.
The Junior clubs of 646 juniors
have as their project aiding a
crippled child at Eugene by furn
ishing foster home care expenses.
There are 4600 women in Ore
gon, 99 senior clubs, 18 junior
clubs. Their goal is to increase
membership. There are five dis
tricts and the club members of
General Federation are responsi
ble for the Pure Food and Drug
Act, and Federal response to li
braries. Mrs. Johnson stresses the need
for organizing new junior clubs.
The 4th district has 16 clubs, one
Junior, the Tillicum club, with
643 district members. There were
two scholarships awarded in the
4th district for the Penny Art
fund.
Her closing thought was "Let's
make good use of our time for our
club, community, state and na.
tion." ,
The first and second grades of
Boardman school, with Mrs. Zoe
Billings as leader, entertained
with two square dances.
Guests present were Mrs. Leo
nard Bodord, Mrs. Everett Daniels,
Mrs. Marion Morlan, Mrs. Stanley
Partlow, Mrs. Roy Partlow, Mrs.
Woody Malone, Mrs. J. Getz, Mrs.
Delmer Hug and Mrs. Eugene
Sawyer, of Boardman; Mrs. Ken
neth Earwood of Los Angeles, and
Mrs. Alma Aase of Brooklyn, N.Y.
Members present were Mrs. Ta
tone, Mrs. Ronald Black, Mrs. Ray
Gronqulst, Mrs. Eldon Shannon,
Mrs. Sigvald Aase, Mrs. Ralph
Skoubo, Mrs. Wayne Conyers, Mrs.
Vernon Russell, Mrs. Harold Bak
er, Mrs. Gunnar Skoubo, Mrs. C.
Higuera and Mrs. Don Downey.
Hostesses were Mrs. Shannon, Mrs.
Ralph Skoubo, Mrs. G. Skoubo and
Mrs. Tatone.
Mrs. William Garner and Mrs.
Dewey West went to Corvallls
Tuesday of last week to attend the
meeting of the state council of the
Home Extension unit. Mrs. West Is
a county committee member and
Mrs. Garner is an alumni of the
committee. They returned home
Thursday evening. The council
was held June 4-6.
Residents of this community
were busy the last of the week
cleaning up yards and streets and
roads from the hard storm Wed
nesday. Winds of gale force up
rooted trees and filled yards with
large limbs all over the project. A
hard rain fell also. Several homes
narrowly missed being struck by
falling trees. The irrigation canal
was plugged by tumble weeds
and washed over Its banks, doing
some damage to potato fields In
the west end. At the spillway In
the west end several feet of the
ditch was washed out. Water
service was not restored until
Monday afternoon. Many homes
were without electricity for 12 to
14 hours and telephone lines were
out, including all the toll lines
out of town.
The Ladies Aid society of Com.
munity church met Wednesday
afternoon of last week at the
home of Mrs. Nate Macomber,
with Mrs. Charlie Dillon as co
hostess. There were 13 members
present. In the absence of the
president, Mrs. Laura Allen, secre
tary, conducted the meeting. Mrs.
Elvin Ely led the devotional pro
gram. Miss Jean Scott and Miss
Zelma Cowan sang a duet.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Darling of
Kennewick visited Mr. and Mrs.
Arnin Hug Sunday. In the evening
Darling showed a movie at the
Community church service.
Mrs. Evangeline McNeill of the
Cannon Beach Bible conference,
and Lanson Ross, youth speaker,
will be in charge of services at
the Community church Sunday.
Donnie Pieper of Portland is vis
iting at the home of his grand
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walt Wyss.
Bud Puckett of Prinevllle is
visiting at the home of his sister,
Mr. and Mrs. George Anderson.
Jeannie Campbell of Spokane Is
visiting her grandparents, Mr. and
Mrs. Earl Brlggs.
Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Russell are
parents of a son born June 6 at
Good Shepherd hospital in Her
miston. He has been named Don
ald Eugene. Grandparents are Mr.
and Mrs. Seth Russell of Board
man, and Mr. and Mrs. George
Copple of The Dalles. The baby
weighed 7 pounds ounces.
Vet Conyers was called to Spo
kane last week by the death of
his son Vernon, 55, who died June
4. Funeral services were in Spo
kane Friday. Mrs. Wayne Conyers
accompanied Conyers to Spokane

ied her brother-in-law and sister,
Mr. and Mrs. Al Macomber of Ar
lington to Olympia, Wash., Fri
day to visit the ladies cousin, Mrs,
Drusie Wood. On their way home
