Notice is hereby given that an
election will be held in School
creasing the tax levy for the fis-
cal year 1957-1958 over the
amount limited by Section 11,
Article XI, of the Constitution of
Oregon.
The reasons for increasing such
levy are:
1. The low tax base due to
the fact that some districts lost
their base entirely and others
could only be increased by the
legal, allowed 67o per year. 2.
Increased . cost in maintaining
buildings and making needed
repairs. 3. Increases in teach
ers salaries.. 4. High cost of
supplies and equipment and re
pairs to some of our older build
ings. 5. The purchase of three
new busses for District 35cj.
The total base of all Districts
in Morrow County Rural School
District is $154,074.94.
The amount of tax, in excess of
6 limitation, proposed to be
levied for said fiscal year is
$305,576.63.

Visitors Bureau is once more making elaborate preparations
for its summerlong "New York Is A Summer Festival"
activities. -
This brings up the pertinent question "What is a 'Sum
mer Festival' without a Queen?"
Charming, blonde Fran Miller, a Conover television
model, who will be one of several hundred New York's
leading models competing for the "Queen" title discusses
with Lee Meriwether, 1956 "Festival" Queen and former
"Miss America," her chances of succeeding to the title.
The "Summer Festival" Queen will preside over such
outstanding events as the summerlong visit of the replica
of the historic "Mayflower", an all-Picasso exhibit being
presented by the Museum of Modern Art; the dedication of
the International Arrival Building at New York's Interna
tional Airport, as well as the multitude of attractions, both
old and new, that has made New York a haven for tourists
from the four corners of America and the world.
The new "Queen," following her selection by a dis
tinguished Judging Committee, will assume her title on
Thursday, June 20th, when the "Summer Festival" will be
formally launched by Mayor Robert F. Wagner and Ethel
Merman, singing star of "Happy Hunting," in her role as
"Official Hostess" of the "New York Is A Summer Festi
val" season.

proved there would be no restric
tion on wheat marketing, and the
support rate would be 507c of
parity. However, growers would
have to stav within their acreage
allotment to be eligible for sup
port. Last week we made no mention
of our recommended vegetable
varieties for 1957 which we had
carried in the past two news
columns The reason for this was
at the time the column was being
written it acted like it could snow
any minute and did not put us in
a mood for discussing gardens.
Since the weather changed ab
ruptly and the ground warmed
sufficiently we can continue this
week, it is now time for the first
of successive plantings of sweet
corn.
Many have their favorite vari
eties among the good ones are
Pot O' Glod, a new medium early
variety worth a trial. About 12
gardeners grew this sweet corn in
1956 and were well pleased with
it. It may be hard to buy seed
this year. North Star is an extra
early medium quality variety.
Seneca Golden and Golden
Beauty are both early varieties
with Seneca Arrow as a medium
early one. Golden Cross bantam
is perhaps the most popular and
is a good main crop and later
variety. It is also time for cu
cumber plantings. Burpee hy
brid, Sensation hybrid, Surecrop
hybrid, ilemon, Straight Eight
and Cubet are slicing varieties
and have proven popular here.
Pickling varieties are M R 17,
Snows perfection, National and
Mincu, the last two are earlier
varieties. Summer varieties in
clude zucchini hybrids, caserta
straight neck and yankee Hybrid.
Small winter varieties are uconn
table queen and butternut; large
varieties include a green hub
bard squash, banana, sweet meat
and golden delicious.
