growth of retail foods stores,
Zelma Reigle, OSC food market
ing specialist, tells how Oregon
shoppers are sharing in the na
tional pattern.
Today's stores, she says, carry
about 5000 to 7000 different items.
These include everything from
toiletries, packaged dinners and
toys to housewares, music, maga
zines and potted plants.
To meet shoppers' wants, gro
cery stores have become 'super
markets." The number of big
stores those with sales over a
million dollars a year more
than tripled in the U. S. in the
six years between 1948 and 1954.
In grandmother's day, market
ing was a system for selling food
and fiber, Miss Reigle continues.
Today, services are important
items of trade. Shoppers are
buying more partially or fully
nrpnarpd foods and ready-made
textile products to save time and
effort of home preparation.

has influenced the size of mar

Food shoppers apparently like
the time-saving conveniences of
processed, packaged ana con

willing to pay extra money for
them, Miss Reigle points out.
Shoppers are spending about two-

than they spent in 1954. And
the experts say the increase if
going mainly for marketing services.
