4-H Club Organized
A new 4-H club, the beginners
in sewing, was recently organ
iced at the C. E. Brenner home
with Mrs. Brenner as their leader
and JoAnn Turner as assistant.

send, Marilee Leathers, Elaine
Gaarsland, Frances McLeod,
Dolores Emert, Cheryle Lundell,
and Sandra Eubanks. The of
ficers are Sandra Eubanks, presi

dent; Elaine Gaarsland, secre
tary; Cheryle Lundell, reporter
and Frances McLeod, song lead
er. Miss Beverly Bradshaw of
Heppner was also present at the
meeting. Their next meeting
will be at the Brenner home on

Mrs. G. Hermann returned
home last week from Portland
and Oswego where she visited
her son and daughter-in-law, Lt.
and Mrs. Helmuth Hermann.
Mr. and Mrs. Alvin McCabe
of La Grande were visitors here
last week and also attended the
funeral of his great-grandma-
Algott W. Lundell
Algott Walfred Lundell passed
away at his home in Gooseberry,
Jan. 22. He was born in Belota,
Calif., Feb. 8, 1886 and in 1887
the family moved to Oregon set
tling on a homestead 14 miles
south of lone. The family suf
fered the hardships of pioneers,
tilling the soil with meager
equipment, and helped to organ
ize and dedicate Valby "Lutheran
church. He was confirmed into
the church in 1903 and remained
an active member, serving as
organist for the past 14 years. He
was a member of Willows grange
and the Heppner Elks lodge.
He was married to Beulah
Wagner June 7, 1914 and in 1916
acquired his own ranch where he
resided until his death from a
heart attack. Services were held
at the lone Community church
January 25 with The Rev. Merlin
Zier officiating. Burial was in
the Valby cemetery. Mrs. J. 0.
Turner was organist and Mrs.
Lucy Peterson was soloist. Bear
ers were Cecil Lutkins, E. Wil
liam Bergstrom, Carl F. Berg
strom, Leonard Carlson, Oscar
Peterson and Henry Baker.
Surviving are his wife Beulah,
three sons, Raymond, lone; Char
les, Oakland; Wallace, Portland;
and five grandchildren.
Out-of-town relatives who at
tended the services included Mr.
and Mrs. Charles Lundell, Oak
land, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. Wal
lace Lundell, Portland; Mr. and
Mrs. Harland Lundell, Boise, Ida
ho; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lundell
and Sharon, Pendleton; Mrs.
Elmo McMillan, Salem; Mr. and
Mrs. Ray Turner, Pendleton.

ported here in town was 22 be

Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Drake and
daughter of Forest Grove were
visitors . here last week. Mr.
Drake is a student at Pacific
University.
Temperature Drops
To -29 at Monument

Saturday and Sunday morn
ings the temperature here went
down to 29 below zero but this
Monday morning it was up to
just 12 below at daylight.
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Scott and
son Robert Dale of Long Creek
spent Saturday afternoon and
evening at the Matfeson home.
No matter the weather, the
logging goes on as Bob Kelly,
Wilbur Flower, Charles Roach,
Roy Leathers, Joe Mellor and
Dale Matteson all reported for
work at Long Creek this morning.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Mellor and
two children drove to John Day
on business and for a checkup for
their daughter, Charlene.
Services were held Thursday
afternoon at 2 p. m. in the Com
munity church for Harry Capon
who accidently shot himself

Charlene Mellor had a group
of school friends after school on
Wednesday to celebrate her
birthday.
Mrs. Dick Williams was called
to Long Creek Thursday morning
and from there rushed her daugh
ter Barbara McDonald to the
John Day hospital where she had
a baby girl that evening. This
is the first grandchild for the
Dick Williams family.
Maynard Hamilton and Lee
Slocum returned home from
Pendleton Saturday where they
have been for 41 days where Lee
underwent surgery three times.
His son Gerald and Rho BTeak
man went after them.
