Record Vegetable
Crop Harvested
In Oregon in 1956
Almost ideal weather helped
Oregon growers harvest a record
crop of vegetables for processing
last year, according to Steve
Marks, extension agricultural
economist at Oregon State col
lege. Value of vegetable crops har
vested for processig totaled $21.5
million almost a third more
than the year before, Marks says.
Oregon's outturn of nine of the
10 main vegetable crops grown
for processing weighed close to
300 million tons. This is about
40 percent more than was grown
in 1955 and considerably above
average.
While the acreage in the state
planted to vegetable crops was
somewhat larger than the year
before, Marks says the increased
production in 1956 came mainly
from higher average yields.
Largest yield Increases over the
previous year were found In green
peas, up 125 percent over 1955;
sweet corn, with an increase of
about two-thirds; and cucumbers
which were up 60 percent.
National production of vege
table crops for processing also
set new records. More than 8
million tons of vegetables, with
a record farm value of $315 mil
lion, were sold for canning and
freezing.
Oregon ranked third among the
states in value of vegetables pro
duced for processing. California
topped the list followed by Wis
consin, Oregon, New Jersey and
Washington.

an increase of 3 percent compared
with the same months in 1955.
Farmers took In more money from
both crops and livestock, with
larger marketings of both more
than offsetting the lower average
prices farmers received In 1956.
Nationwide, Mrs. Horrell said
farm income turned up after four
years of decline. The realized
net income of the nation's far
mers, based on the first nine
months of 1956, was 4 percent
above that of 1955. Mrs. Horrell
thinks soil bank payments had a
hand in swelling the 1956 total.
In general, the nation's farmers
came up with a crop production
that equalled the highs set in
1948 and 1955. And Mrs. Horrell
reports this was done with the

membership cards and Rose
Marie Nash and Wilma Bothwell

26 at Carol K. Anderson's.
