seeds per pound passed 640,000
whole seeds daily. Some of the
seeds actually germinated better
after passing through the diges
tive tract. The affect of digestion
on the viability of weed seeds
varied with the kind of animal.
Ranked to percentage of viable
seeds passed, calves led the list,
followed by hogs, horses, sheep,
and chickens in that order. Cattle
fed weed seeds will pass viable
seds for at least a week after
they have been removed from the
source of seeds. Greg pointed
out that most weed seeds have a
rather high chemical analysis,
especially protein and fat. This
is not a total indication of feed
ing value, since many weed seeds
have a bitter taste, or cannot
be easily ground to a fineness
which makes them more palat
able. Palability in these cases is
more important than total di
gestible fiber, and were very low
in digestible nitrogen-free ex
tract. Greg summed up the subject
of whether screenings were a
good feed or a source of weed in
festation as follows: "While
screenings offer some nutritional
value as livestock feed, this value
is more than offset by the danger
of planting weed seeds unless
they are properly processed. In
buying feed screenings, buy only
recleaned screenings on the basis
of reliable samples and consider
the composition of the screenings,
their palatability and whole
someness, fineness of grinding or
the method of devitalization of
weed seeds."
