Here is potentially the great
est threat to the American econ
omic system that has ever been
developed. A friendly under
standing between a few retail
organizations with a few union
leaders could put a monopolistic
straight-jacket on the entire free
enterprise system of distribution.
It is difficult to see sales people
fit into a labor union.
Selling and sales ability Is an
intangible that has nothing to do
with education, background, or
degree of intelligence. Some peo
ple make superior salesmen. Yet
there are many brilliant people
who could not sell $5 bills for $2.
By and large, today indepen
dent retailers pay more for sales
people, because they select peo
ple who possess that hard to de
fine intangible, superior sales
ability. In addition, their train
ing is such that many of these
inrinnendent sales people get the
experience that enables them to
open their own business. Huge
retailing' operations pay less
money, but are content to have
mediocre sales people, and hope
the more competent will want to
continue in the corporation.

first, for many reasons.

agement will negotiate overterms
of a contract. It is a certainty
management will strive to get
terms to their advantage, and to
detriment of independent compe
tition. It is also certain union
leaders will not fight to preserve
independent business.
Thus, as has haonened in other
Belds, there will be what amounts
to a ronsniracv to prescribe
wages, hours and conditions for
all retail sales persons along
the nattcrn that is best for a few
huge retailing operations.
To make their contracts good,
the union leaders will then have
to enforce this pattern on all.
Any independent merchant
bucking this unholy alliance will
be subject to union reprisals.
While all this activity may not
be worthwhile to the union mere
ly to collect dues from a few
scattered sales people, on other
hand, if they don't enforce the
same contract on all, they jeop
ardize contract relationship with
huge retailers with their thous
ands of people paying dues.
Thus, unions can accomplish
things for big corporations which
the corporations could not do
for themselves without facing
prosecution for violation of anti
trust laws. And while some may
say that in taking the stand they
have, the nation's independent
businessmen are, as the phrase
goes "labor baiting," this is not
thi rase. It's lust that U. S. Con
stitution never set up provisions
for a class immune from laws
which govern rest of society. The
Founding Fathers were opposed
to old doctrines of Divine rights
of kings, whether those kings
came from pedigrees in the Al
manac de Gotha, or from picket
lines.
