1952 was not a Republican
year it was an Ike year, only
the GOP lost the Congress and
some governors.
By his mid-term (1949-1953)
President Harry Truman had
been given such a thorough hat
chet job by the 80-percent- Re
publican press that anyone else
anybody could think of was wel
come as his successor by a large
majority of the voters.
Then came Ike, a fresh and
new candidate, "A hero we got,"
with the keenest, briefest, double
edged political slogan ever de
vised, "I Like Ike." A GOP song
hit, it was etched on their chests I
and war chests. Subconsciously!
it was translated to, "And We
Don't Like Harry."
Until late August there was
little trend that gave Stevenson
supporters hope that he would be
a highly successful campaigner.
Since then and particularly since
reports of Increasing Democratic
gains in voter registrations, a
groundsweil for the Democrats
has been growing and Adlai has
got into a vote-winning stride.
World war talk will not aid the
president according to unbiased
foreign correspondents.
Private poolsters, who take the
polls themselves, guard them
carefully and use them for gamb
ling only, have lowered their odds
on the Morse-McKay duel. Three
weeks ago they were offering to1
bet 3 to 5 that Morse would carry
every county in the state. This
week they offered 4 to 5 on the
bet.
The answer to the foregoing

The Supreme Court ruled that'
Yates was performing a duty to
his client, and that there is no
evidenc that the judge's tone
was not irascible.
HAPPY LANDING ELMO
In flying around the state
during his current campaign for
election Gov. Elmo Smith has
been annoyed by cracks in the
runways of some airports.
Federal aid for their repair has
not b;en forthcoming from the
present administration. Gov.
Smith has sent a noiite note to
the state board of aeronautics to
study their budget for possible
repair work.
That ought to do it. The gover
nor appoints the members of the
board. :
STATE VEHICLE AUCTION
Forty five used vehicles, rang-!
ing from 19 10 to 1955 models will
be auctioned by the state on
Nov. 1 at 1 p. m. at the State
Fairgrounds livestock pavilion.
The equipment will be avail-'
able for inspection between 9 a.
m. and 5 p. m. from October 30
to 31, and from 8 a. m. to 1 p. m. 1
on November 7.
The sale includes trucks, pick-'
ups, hanclimans, jeeps, delivery
sedans, coupes, and two-door and

The Slate Board of Control has
turned down a request from a
Salem paper company for a con
nection with the state sewer line
south of the Capital.
The Board acted on the advice
of Atty. General Robert Y. Thorn
ton who ruled the state has no
authority to grant such a reciuest
from a private coirmanv.
