INCOME TAX YIELDS
Tax Commissioner Ray Smith
who heads the income tax de
partment and has always been
an astonishingly accurate progos
ticator of income tax returns, esti
mates there will be a surplus of
over $20,000,000 at the end of the
1955-57 biennium, and $15,000,
000 June 30. It will require an
other three weeks to get accurate
figures for the latter total.
The 1955 legislature lowered
the exemptions from $600 to $500,
put on a 45 per cent surtax (a
tax upon a tax) and raised
withholdings from 1 to 2 per cent.

Public Utilities Commissioner
Charles H. Heltzel had issued an
order permitting Pacific Grey
hound and Trailways bus lines to
increase their passenger fares in
Oregon by 15 per cent.
The order which will be ef
fective shortly after July 10 also

The State Unemployment Com
pensation Commission reported
this week that lumber and log
ging employment fell below last
year's figures during the month
of June. t
Oregon's non-farm jobs in May
showed an increase of 1.8 per
cent and in August and Septem
ber is expected to exceed 2 per
cent.
State insured unemployment
was down to 6.578 claims in May,
the lowest figure since August
1955.
"WONDER DRUGS"
The use of new tranquilizing
"wonder drugs" at the Oregon
State Hospital was explained to
health council, members Friday
by Dr. Kenneth Gaver, education
and research director of the state
institution.

a program in counciling for min

Parking space around the Capi
tol and state buildings in Salem
should be easier to find within
a few weeks.
Some of the residences on pro
perty bought by the state for fu
ture extension of the Capitol Mall
are being removed to get park
ing room for state workers and
afford parking for state "custo
mers." Tlie large rooms in the resi
dences are being used to relieve
crowded periods at the Capitol
during-legislature, Interim com
mittee meetings, voters pamph
let mailing and other emergen
cies. The clearing and surface work
is being done by the City of Salem
and some city property is being
loaned to the state, City Engineer
H. L. Davis says surfacing under
construction will be complete
within ten days and those having
business to do in state buildings
should find ampel parking.
