Heppner Gazette Times, Thursday, May 31, 1956 lone Church Class By Echo Palmateer The intermediate class of the lone Community church has sent $37.00 to Heifers for Relief, Inc. to end their special project for this school year. One hive of bees for $2 was sent to Taiwan, Formosa and 100 chicks for $25 to Cuenca Ecuador where the Panama hat industry has collapsed resulting in poverty among their people. These animals are sent to provide food and an income. Each family receiving these animals promise to pass part of their Increase on to other families, thus, a chain of giving is set up and more and more families benefit as time goes on. The people receiving the animals are instructed as to how they may best be cared for. The intermediates had original. y decided to adopt an orphan in some foreign country but this project proved to be too great an undertaking for this class of 16 pupils who are: Joan Turner, Jean Martin, Linda Helmblgner, Ken neth Smouse, Melvin Martin, Bob Akers, Francis Rea, Judy Morgan, Linda Hams, Karen Lundell, rhil Emert, Ann Baker, Lona White, Marilyn Morgan, Sharon Crabtree, Bob Rice, and Erenda Townsend. Mrs. Fredrick Martin is the teacher. Anna Baker, who left for Port land to make her home, was a guest of honor at an outdoor sup per party at the home of Marilyn Morgan Friday evening May 25. Baseball ' and other games were played by the 14 young people present. They were directed by Bob Rice and Bob Akers. In the newspaper costume designing contest, Kenneth Smouse received first prize for his Knight and Armor and Mrs. Fredrick Martin, second for her Sweet Sixteen crea tion. Ann Baker was presented with a pen and pencil set from the members of the intermediate Sunday school class who arrang ed the party for her. Mrs. Harry Yarnell and son, Alton, returned home from Port land, Vancouver, Wash., and Mad. ras last week where they visited relatives. She reported that her son, Clifford Yarnell has moved from Vancouver to Madras where he is with the Case Implement Company. Mr. and Mrs. Merle Baker and children left for Portland last week where they have purchased a new home. He will be employ ed with a grain company. Harold Holtz returned last week from Tacoma, where he visited his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Kirkelie. Mr. and Mrs. Delmer Crawford and daughters, Marlene and An ita spent the weekend in Port land. The electric storm last week did considerable damage to the phones south of lone. The phone at the Clarence Holtz ranch was burned out and the curtains in the house were scorched. Mr. and Mrs. Dale Lundell and son Eddy, and Mrs. Bair, Oak land, Calif., visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Lundell last weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Drake and her two brothers from Heppner s)?nt the weekend in Forest Grove and visited the Pacific Uni. versify. The school faculty enjoyed a luncheon at the school cafetor ium Friday May 25 at noon. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Phil Newitt, Joe Ilausler. Mrs. Selma Johnson, Miss Zoe Porfily, Larry Pryse, Grant Rigby, Gary Step henson, Mrs. Grace Schmidt, Mrs. Harriet Hall, Mrs. Roxie Meock, and Gladys Ely and Delmer Crawford. Mrs. C. E. Brenner and Mrs. John Jackson served the luncheon. The teachers presented Mr. and Mrs. Newitt with a fare well gift. Mrs. Cecil Thome and Mrs. D. W. Akers are visiting in Oakes dale, Wash., and other places near there. j The Garden club held a very successful plant sale and food sale at the Rebekah hall Satur day afternoon. I Mr. and Mrs. Paul O'Meara re turned home last week from1 Santa Rosa, Calif., where they attended the funeral of his bro-1 ther, Jack O'Meara. According to the Oregonian, Robert Severin was drowned in the Chewaucan river near his home in Taisley Friday May 25. lie visited here, a few years ago when his wife, Bertha Severin, taught in the lone schools. Rev. Alfred Shirley plans to re turn from the Pioneer Memorial hospital Tuesday of this week. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Lovgren and son Dean, of Lewis Creek, B C. Seehafer of Bickle ton, Wash., was a visitor here last week. Bert and Olga Johnson of Port land were visitors here last week. Walter Roberts went to Portland with them and will also visit relatives in Chehalis, Washing ton. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hellker were guests at the Peter Timm home in Pendleton last week. Mrs. Heliker and Mrs. Timm at tended an Iris Club show in Walla Walla Friday. The program at the party, given in honor of Rev and Mrs. McKay and son, Neil Tuesday evening May 22 at the Legion hall con-1 sisted of two violin solos by Mrs. Kenneth Smouse, three humorous readings by Mrs. Ernest Heliker, a reading on prayers by Mrs. Ella Borgoyne and a song by the McKays. Slides were shown of missionaries in Japan. They were sent to the McKays by their son Bartlett McKay, who is a mission, ary in Japan. They left last week for Orofino, Idaho. They were presented with a love offering from the Nazarene church by Mrs. Art Brownlow. Neil was pre. sented with a gift from the young people of the church. Those in charge of the party were Mrs. Art Brownlow, Mrs. Ralph Crum and Mrs. Ruby Nichols. They wish to thank all those who helped to make the party a suc cess and also, to thank the Le gion for the use of the hall. Rev. L. M. Rambo, of Kenne wick, Wash., will be the supply pastor for the Nazarene church until the later part of June when the regular pastor, Rev. Charles Wilkes will take charge. Rev. Mrs. Elizabeth Campbell of B. C. Canada is the great-grand, mother. The Eastern Star social club met at the home of Mrs. Earl Blake in Heppner May 23 with Mrs. Anne Smouse and Mrs. Harlan McCurdy Sr. as co-hostesses. A luncheon was served at noon and bridge and pinochle were played after the business meeting. Those winning prizes were, high in bridge, Mrs. Char les O'Connor and Mrs. E. M. Baker, low. In pinochle, Mrs. Walter Ruggles high and Mrs. Fred Mankin low. Mrs. Elmer Holtz and -daughter, Kathy, Misses Virginia and Anna Jepsen left Tuesday for Coos Bay where they will visit their sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Newton. They will also visit their brother, John Jep sen at Klamath Falls who is attending the Oregon Tech school there. Rev. A. F. Beawer of Sunnyside visited at the Elmer Holtz home last week. Mr. and Mrs. David Rietmann and family left Tuesday for Cali fornia to visit relatives. Joel Engleman was a Portland visitor the first of the week. Where the lone teachers will spend the summer: Mr. and Mrs. Phil Newitt will leave soon for Sunset Valley where he will be superintendent of schools the coming year. C. Jones. Miss Dona Barnett has been on the sick list this week, but is reported to be improving. Mrs. Henderson from La Grande spent several days here last week attending her grandson Larry Henderson's graduation from the high school. Tommy Steagall who has been attending blind school in Salem is at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Steagall where he will spend the summer. Mrs. Crystal Casteel and small daughter arrived from Wyoming to visit her daughter Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Doherty and to attend the commencement exercises here. She is the mother of Don Casteel, one of the 1956 gradu ates.
