A Change in Sports
We have started baseball this
week and have 13 fellows out.
We have been playing catch and
learning the fundamentals of bat-
ting. We have also started on
track this week and have 11 fel
lows out for this sport. We are
well equipped this year with a
new shot put. a new discus, a
new javelin, and a new pole
vaulting pole. In tennis, we
have 13 fellows out. We are

English Lit. Class
English III literature class has
has been studying non-fiction se
lections written bv well-known
and expert news reporters, such
as William Shirer, Ernie Pyle,
and Daniel Lang, who were eye
witnesses of their narratives. .
One article bv W. L. Shirer,
was about the armistice signed
June 21, 1940. The writer
watched through field glasses
and listened in a sound truck in
the woods not fax from the ar
mistice car in which the Ger
mans had hidden microphones.
The ironv of this is that this
time the German plenipotentiary,
Hitler, has his revengeiui tri
umph by meeting surrendered
France at the Identical spot in
the forest of Compiegne, in the
same old French sleeping car in
which Marshal Foch laid down
the armistice terms to Germany
twenty-two years berore. inis
time Hitler occupies Marshall
Foch's chair and uses the same
table for the signing. The Ger
man dignitaries arrive at 3:15.
Through field glasses, Shirer,
notes the expressions of hate and
scorn on the faces of Hitler,
Goring, Keitel and the other
German dignitaries all in uni
form with the Iron Cross hanging
from the left breast pocket. They
strut around in their Prussian
boots, readinc inscriptions on
statues written by the French,
following War I. At 3:18 p. m
Hitler's personal flag is run up.
At 3:23 p. m. Hitler and his tol
lowers enter the armistice car.
Now, thru the Microphones Shirer
hears the armistice terms, The
speakers and then the scratching
of the pens as they sign the ar
mistice. Hitler did not wait for
details. The whole ceremony is
over in a quarter of an hour.
"Break-through in Normandy"
Is another selection relating to
'Jeep' truck in
Selectivity. The 'Jeep' Truck shifts easily from
conventional 2-wheel drive for normal high
way driving into 4-wheel drive for tough going.

ticipated in the "break through",
met Gen. Bradley, slept and ate
with the boys from colonels to
privates. He slept in trenches
and heard the bombs whistle and
swish overhead. He experienced
the tenseness of muscles and the
nerves of the men when they were
under the awful attack of their
own American troops. Ernie
Pyle expressed this from first
hand experience, July 2d, 1944.
The Atomic City is written by
Daniel Lang. His writing is con
cise and informative and he per
haps gleaned as much informa
tion from this war-born commun
ity of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, with
its tradition:" secretiveness, as
anyone. Men working there were
instructed not to give any infor
mation, and thev themselves did
not know what they were working
on. One inquirer asked a
watchman once, if he were sure
that wasn't the Vatican.
These articles are excellent ex
amples of reporting first-hand
news information given in a
narrative style.
