Mrs. Crawford Hostess
For lone Sorority
The Beta Omega chapter of
Epsilon Sigma Alpfia met Wed
nesday December 7 at the home
of Francine Crawford.
A report was given on the re
sults of the card party and dutch
auction held December 2 at the
Legion hall. $106.86 was taken
in with $70.60 of the total given
for the dutch auction, Ed Bus
chke won the basket as the bell
rang.
A chili supper is planned be
fore the Heppner-Ione basketball
game with donations accepted
for the dinner, and proceeds going
to the cemetery fund. This will
be held at the school cafetorium.
At this date, the sorority has no
definite figure concerning the
complete cost of the cemetery
project.
A Christmas party Is planned
at Mrs. Don Heliker's home, the
president of the local chapter,
for all members and guests.
Hostesses for the evening were
Mrs. Pat Doherty and Mrs, Don
McElligott.

At Van Marter Home
Mr. and Mrs. La Verne Van
Marter were hosts at a dessert
bridge party last Friday evening.
Guests were Mrs. Eddie Gun
derson, Mrs. James Norene, Mrs.
William Labhart, Mr .and Mrs.
James Popham, Mrs. William
Sowell, Jack Bailey, Alton Yar
nell and Mrs. Robert Miller, lone
and Mrs. Fred Sanders.
Mrs. Miller held high score and
Mrs .Sowell was low.

zette Times at dinner Monday
evening.
Christmas decorations were
used around the room and on the
tables.
Those present were Mr. and
Mrs. Ray Smith, Mr. and Mrs.
Jack Bedford, Mr. and Mrs .Tom
Wilson, Neal Penland and the
host and hostess.
Church Groups Elect
Officers For Year
St. Elizabeth's Guild of All
Saints Episcopal church met
Tuesday afternoon at the Parish
hall for election of officers. Four
teen were present.
Officers elected for 1956 are
Mrs. Lucy Peterson, chairman and
Mrs. A. D. McMurdo, secretary

the hostesses, Mrs. E. E. Gilliam

St. Monica's Guild of All Saints'
Episcopal church held a regular
meeting Tuesday, December 6 at
Parish hall with 12 present.
Officers were elected for the
coming year as follows: chair
man, Mrs. Frank Anderson; vice-'
chairman, Mrs. Robert Dobbs;1
secretary-treasurer, Mrs. Eddie
Gunderson.
Refreshments were served by
the hostesses, Mrs. Robert Dobbs,
and Mrs. James Farley.

Sets Wedding Date
Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Griffith an
nounce the coming marriage of
their daughter, Rene, to Mr. Leon
ard Toll, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Gib Toll of Redmond.
The wedding will be Sunday,
December 25 in the Heppner
Methodist church at 7:00 p. m."
A reception will follow in the
church parlors.

here points out the evolutionary design linking a modern outboard
motor with the helmet worn by armored knights.
"Medieval artisans were experts in functional design," Stevens
explains, "and this styling is being recaptured in today's industrial
motifs. A typical example is Johnsons' new thirty h.p. outboard, a
chrome-trimmed custom-styled unit which, appropriately enough in
view of its design origin, is called the 'Javelin ."
"We call it 'advanced' styling but it's a modern adaptation of the
art of the ancient craftsmen."
The Javelin is one of nine 1956 models in which the manufacturer
places emphasis on style and color.
Mrs. L. L. Robbins entertained
with a party Wednesday after
noon, December 7 in honor of the
third birthday of her daughter,
Ree Ella.

Christmas Party Set
By Legion Auxiliary
The American Legion auxiliary
held a regular meeting Tuesday,
December 6, at the home of Mrs.
John Lane.
Members finished favors to be
used at the Christmas dinner
given annually at the U. S. Vet
erans hospital, Portland. $100.00
was sent to the hospital for "Gifts
for Yanks" and gifts were sent
for the Gift Shop at the Portland
hospital from which gifts are
chosen by hospitalized veterans
and are wrapped and sent to
their destination, free to the vet
eran. Announcement was made that
the Heppner auxiliary needs only
two members to complete its
quota.
The next meeting will be a
Christmas party, and exchange
of gifts, December 20th, at the
home of Mrs. Kemp Dick with
Mrs. John Hartman assisting.
Refreshments were served by
the hostess.
Bridal Shower Held
For Shirley Peck
Miss Shirley Peck, bride-elect
of Roger Palmer was honored
Saturday afternoon at a miscel
laneous shower at the Rhea
Creek grange hall. About thirty
were present.
Hostesses were Mrs. Harold
Wright, Mrs. Walter Wright, Mrs.
Orian Wright, Mrs. John Berg
strom, Miss Marilyn Bergstrom
and Mrs. Alfred Lovgren.
Cake and coffee were served,
following the opening of the
gifts.

Christmas Party Held
By Methodist W.S.C.S.
The W. S. C. S of the Methodist
church held their Christmas party
at the church Wednesday even
ing of last week. A business
meeting preceded the party.
Hostesses were Mrs. Charles
Vaughn, Mrs. J. O. Hager and
Miss Ona Gilliam.
Mrs. Lucille Owens and Mrs.
Ted Smith gave the Christmas
story, Mrs. Douglas Drake read a
poem. Susan Drake and Linda
Smith presented piano numbers
and Mrs. Tom Wells sang a solo.
Rev. Lester Boulden read the
Christmas story from the Bible.
There were about 4o members
present.

At Bridge Party
Mr. and Mrs. William Labhart
were hosts Wednesday evening of
last week at a bridge party for
the following guests: Mrs. La
Verne Van Marter, Mrs. Jack Van
Winkle, Mrs. Creston Robison,
Alton Yarnell, Jack Bailey and
Glenn Ward.
Refreshments were served. .

The Happy Bluebirds met for
their regular meeting. New offi
cers elected were president, Pa
tricia Van Winkle; vice respident,
Lynn Burkenbine; secretary,
Joan Stockard; treasurer, Vickie
Barratt; reporter, Tamara Smith
and rerfeshment chairman, Jean
Stockard.
We will not have any more
meetings until January 10. After
our meeting we made Christmas
pictures, using Christmas cards
and birthday candles.

Motor Vehicle
Registration Climbs
Motor vehicle registration in
creased nearly seven percent In
Oregon during the first nine
months of 1955. There was 657,-
773 vehicles registersd with the
secretary of state as compared
with 615,096 during the January
to September period of 1954.
Passenger cars totalled 575,027;
busses, 1,432; and trucks, 76,025.
The report, issued by secretary
of state Earl T. Newbry, also
showed his office issued 47,290
new drivers' licenses and 35,488
instruction permits during the
nine months tabulated. The of
fice renewed licenses of another
277,090 drivers in the state.
Issuance of original driver li
censes increased 5.46 percent over
the comparable 1954 period.
State estimates place the" total
number of drivers now holding
Oregon licenses at about 850,000,

Mrs. Douglas Ogletree was a
dinner guest Monday evening at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ervin
Anderson.
Mr. and Mrs. Emil Groshens
left Tuesday for Portland and
will visit his mother, Mrs. Helene
McCulloch, who is hospitalized
there.
