Boardman Plans

About 30 people attended a
meeting at the grange hall here
on Tuesday, Aug. 16, to discuss
the formation of a Ground Ob
server Corps post. TSgt. Floyd
Hopkins, La Grande, who is in
charge of the corps for Baker,
Union and Malheur counties, was
present and explained the need of
a corps. TSgt. Harkins, Pendle
ton, showed a movie, "Operations
Crossroads", which was taken
during bombing tests on Bikini
Island.
Lt. John Blackburn, command
ing officer of Boardman Bombing
Range, also spoke of the urgent
need of a corps here, and report
ed that a tower is already built,
with electricity expected to be in
it soon, and a telephone installed.
The local Tillicum club is spon
soring the corps here. It was
brought out that if 75 people
signed up to take their turn at
the watch tower, each one would
have to be there only two hours
every twelve days. So far, about
20 have signed up. Lt. Blackburn
stated that the airforce would
man the tower from dark till day
light. Anyone wishing to sign up may
see Mrs. Joe Tatone, president of
the Tillicum club.
The Ladies Aid society of the
Community church met at the
church Wednesday, Aug. 17, with
16 members present. Hostesses
were Mrs. Laura Allen and Mis.
Bob Miller. The ladies voted to
not have a food concession at the
fair this year.

les, Calif., was speaker on the
program, her subject being the
only ONE rider to each bike!

and Professional Womens Clubs
of America. She was also guest
speaker at both services Sunday
at the Community church.
Greenfield grange met Satur
day night at the hall. Hosts were
Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Thorpe and
!Mr. and Mrs. Ed Skoubo: Mr. and
Mrs. Glen Mills were taken in as
new members. Initiation in the
first and second degree will be
given the night of Sept. 3, at the
hall.
The Wives club met last week
at the home of Mrs. Gren Hawes.
Mrs. Al Morin was hostess. There
were seven members present and
Mrs. Dick Trobst was a guest.
The next meeting will be at the
home of Mrs. Hawes on Sept. 6.
At a special meeting of the
Tillicum club on Tuesday, Aug,
16, committees were appointed for
the fair booth and float to be
entered by the club. On the booth
committee for theme and prepa
ration, Mrs. Fred Garrett, Mrs.
Leonard Bedord, Mrs. Don Dow
ney, Mrs. George Wiese, Mrs.
Dewey West and Mrs. Joe Tatone.
Work committee, Mrs. Eldon

Mrs. Maude Moore was taken
to the Umatilla hospital last Fri
day, seriously ill.
Mrs. Emmett Rogers had sur
gery at Good Shepherd hospital
In Hermiston last week. Mrs,
Ray Olmstead also had surgery
there Thursday.

Mrs. Buster Padberg was the
honoree of a delightful cradle
shower given at her home on
Friday night of last week. The
evening was spent in playing
games with prizes being won by
the honoree and Audrey Ansted.
After a most pleasant time she
opened her many fine and useful
gifts, and refreshments were then

Audrey Ansted, Pat Majecke,
Emma Breshears, Bertha Hunt,
Dorothy Edwards, Mildred David

Christian and Congregational
Sunday schools and church were
hostesses to a party honoring Rev.
and Mrs. L. G. Wetzel and family
on Sunday at the Franklin Mes
senger home. This was a pot
