New Coach to Lead lone Cardinals
Football Schedule
Is Announced
The lone high school will hold
its first football practice August
29 at 9:00 a. m. it was announced
this week by Larry Pryse, new
grid coach. This Is Pryse's first
year of high school coaching
though he had an excellent re
cord at Eastern Oregon College at
La Grande where he coached the
freshman teams while a student.
Pryse also has an excellent re
cord In basketball and baseball.
Wayne Pierce, 8th grade teach
er and physical education instruc
tor, will assist Pryse in football,
grade basketball and baseball,
it was announced. Pierce is also a
graduate of EOCE and coached
and taught last year at John Day.
Pierce is an all around athlete
with exceptional ability on the
trampolin.

home games and three games
away according to school offi
cials. It is also hoped that one
more game can be included the
weekend before September 23,
which Is the first game. The

To Be Issued Sunday
Heppner high school .grid coach
James Mallon has Issued a call
for all football team members to
check in at the gym next Sunday
between noon and 6 p. m. for
the issuance of equipment. Prac
tice will start on Monday.
Mallon also said a shoe sales
man will be present Sunday, If
any boy wishes to buy football
shoes.

County Picnic
During Fair to Be
Potluck Affair
Invitations have been sent sev
eral royal courts, bands and other
outside groups to be the guests
at the annual county picnic held
on Saturday noon during fair
weekend at the courthouse park.
The event this year is to be a
potluck affair, it was revealed by
the chamber of commerce, county
court and the fair board, spon
sors of the picnic.
The three organizations will
furnish meat, rolls, punch, coffee
and ice cream for the visiting
courts and band members and ice
cream and coffee will be supplied
for all visitors, it was said. So
roptimists club members, who
will act as hostesses, chamber
of commerce women and wives of
county court members are asked
to furnish either scalloped pota
toes, molded salad or relish dish
es for the queen's table.

Special Fair Sponge
Cake Contest Told
A special $100 cash first prize
will be awarded in a sponge cake
bake-off competition by the Ore
gon Wheat Growers League at its
annual meeting In Pendleton
December 8, 9 and 10. The con
test will be for cake bakers who
have previously won first place
for sponge cakes at 1955 fairs in
the nine wheat counties of Ore
gon. A special division at the Mor
row county fair has been includ
ed for sponge cakes with a first
prize of $5.00, $3.00 for second
and $2.00 for third. Should the
first place winner be unable to
compete in the bake-off the se
cond place winner will be eligi
ble. The bake-off will he held at
the Vert building In Pendleton.
Local cake bakers are urged to
check their fair premium list for
further information or contact
either Mrs. Glenn Campbell, Star
Route, Echo, or Mrs. Norman
Nelson, Lexington.
Finished cakes must be un-
frosled and must have the recipe
attached. All entries must be in
place by 10 a. m. Thursday, Sep
tember 1.

Tours Heppner Mill
Members of the chamber of
commerce were taken on a tour

luncheon meeting Monday by
Paul Koonig, manager of the mill.
The plant started operations
again early this month following
a three-month shutdown during
which the entire plant was re
modeled for greater efficiency.

Four Morrow county grid all
stars are on the east team for the
fourth annual Shrine East-West
B all star football game and all
expect to s?e some action during
the tussle. Game time is 8:00 p.
m. Saturday, August 27, with the
pogeant to start at 7:30.
On the east team from Morrow
county will be Dennis Swanson,
halfback and Malcolm McKinney,
tackle, both from lone; Ralph
Marlatt, center, Heppner; and
Larry Groves, Lexington, half
back. The east team has been
practicing on the EOCE field at
La Grande, and are rated with a
slight edge to take this year's
game from the west squad.

Win Tag Team Match
The chamber of commerce field
lighting fund was $150 richer
after Saturday night's benefit
wrestling matches put on at the
rodeo field, it was revealed by
Jack Loyd, chairman of the spe
cial committee.
Winners in the main event, a
tag team match, was the team of
Red and Doug Donovan, who took
two falls from John Arjon and
Jack Kiser. In preliminary bouts,
Kiser defeated Red Donovan and
Doug Donovan took a one-fall
match from Arjon.
An added attraction of a tram
polin act was well received by
the crowd.

Keeling to Head
Hunt Safety Program
Local efforts to make future ,
hunting seasons safer, fire-free j
and easier on both hunters and;
landowners, will be coordinated
by Kenneth H. Keeling, Heppner,
whose appointment as Morrow
county chairman of Oregon's Red
Hat Day campaign was announ
ced today by Governor Paul Pat
terson. More than a score of state wide
organizations are listed as spon
sors of Red Hat Day, which has
been set for September 23. They
include sportsman, labor, stock
man, agricultural, timber indus
try and governmental groups con
cerned with hunting and hunter
conduct.
In announcing the appoint
ment, Governor Patterson reveal
ed that hunting season reports of
vandalism, firearms accidents,
fires and game law violations
have increased.
"Perhaps only one in a thous
and hunters is to blame for these
reports of poor sportsmanship,"
Patterson said, "but unless we
can reach him through the Red
Hat Day program, he is jeopar
dizing the hunting futute for all
of us."
The state-wide educational
campaign is directed by the
Governor's Red Hat Day Commit
tee,, composed of five representa
tives of sponsor groups. Plans
call for a month-long campaign
in the press and through other
information media to call atten
tion to the sportsman's outdoor
obligations.
Hynd Brothers Make
Fair, Rodeo Gifts
Special radio and fair prize
money amounting to $75 has
been given to the Morrow county
Fair and Rodeo again this year
by W. G, and David Hynd and
the Hynd Brothers Company, it
was revealed this week by the
local fair board.
The money this year will be
used to provide special prizes in
the 4-H showmanship contest,
and in the children's pony races
during the Saturday night show,
it was announced.
For many years both Will and
David Hynd have given $25 each
to the fair which has been used
for FFA and 4-H premiums. The
Hynd Brothers Company check
for $25 has been donated this
year to be used at the discretion
of the fair board.

Wright and son Kenneth, 9, are
members of the Episcopal church
at Heppner.
Wright's great grandfather,
Albert Wright, homesteaded in
the Rock Creek area, near the
Hardman ranch, in 1870 and his
grandfather, Anson Wright, was,
also a homesteader in the area.
Wright began ranching with his (
father, Clyde Wright, about 30 ,
vears a so and since 1935 hasj
carried on the operation by him
self. The headquarters ranch at
Ruggs was purchased in 1927.
"Wright' range and pastures

and he has preserved and improv
ed native grasses that were here
when the homesteaders took
over," Orville Cutsforth, Lexing
ton, chairman of the committee,
pointed out. "Native Timothy
