benefit to livestockmen in in se
lecting replacement heifers this
fall.
From time to time we find some
interesting information among
our 4-H club members who are
carrying livestock projects. From
time to time we have recommend
ed that farm flocks of sheep be
bred to lamb early and lambs
marketed before grass begins to
dry up and while lamb prices are
higher. This of course necessi
tates some creep feeding of lambs
but those who have carried on
the practice have agreed that it
is profitable. A few days ago we
found that Dennis Doherty, Lex
ington Livestock club member,
had some good gaining lambs
that would make money for any
owner. He has a lamb that 57
days of age weighs 60 pounds.
Considering the lamb as 7 or 8
pounds weight when born, he
would not miss a one pound a
day gain far. He also has a lamb
at 78 days of age and weighs 68
pounds. While this is a good gain
too, there is a considerable dif
ference in the two lambs with
the lamb weighing 60 pounds at
57 days having it over the other
one considerably. These are the
kinds of lambs to select when re
placements are made.
The 1954 grasshopper infesta
tion looks like a mild infestation
compared to reports that are
coming in each day on infesta
tions this year. Farmers in scat
tered areas in the county are re
porting heavy infestations with
damage to crops occuring now
even though grasshoppers are
half grown down to just hatch
ing. The bureau of entomology,
who are now making a detailed
survey in the county report such
heavy infestations that an accur
ate count cannot be made. Most
hoppers are found in out-of-way
places where they have hatched
as they have not migrated to
much as yet. During the past
few days much organizational
work has been done in attempt
ing to secure state funds to assist
with the progam and some far
mers have signed agreements to
accept a cooperative program
with the bureau of entomology.
As of today, the chances are
small for securing state funds
and farmers are reluctant to
pledge themselves to spending as
much as 40 cents per acre over
their entire ranch for control. It
is thought that definite word will
be received by the end of this
week whether the state emer
gency board will give considera
tion to assisting with the prob
lem here in Morow County..

WORK STANDARDS UPPED
Effective August 13 will be
higher standards for women and
minors in the fruit and vegetable
packing industry.
An order issued Monday by the
Oregon Wage and Hour Commis
sion sets a 66-cent hourly wage,
minimum, and provides for time:
and a half overtime pay alter lo
hours, and double time after 12
hours daily. Minor employes will
be limited to 10 hours of work a
day. Overtime now is paid after
12 hours.
The new order also requires 10
minute rest periods after three
consecutive work hours, and
weight-lifting restrictions. Meat
processors also are subject to
the new wder.
CAR SHORTAGE STUDIED
"Because of Western Oregon's
rail car shortage, which occurred
earlier and appears more acute
this year many Oregon residents
are on the verge of being laid off
because of the problem of ship
ping out the products of the
state's industries," Governor Pat
terson told come 300 shippers and
railroad representatives at Eu
gene this week.
Patterson proposed the ap
pointment of an advisory com
mittee of shippers to work on the
problem.
Charles II. Heltzel, public utili
ties commissioner, who called the
meeting also presided.
TO REBUILD COAST HIGHWAY
Approval of plans to recon
struct the Oregon Coast Highway
between Bandon and Coos Bay
was made Monday by the Oregon
Highway Commission.
The commission approved the
survey and economic analysis for
the project.
Also approved was construction
of an .18 mile footpath along the
territorial highway between El
mira shopping center and Elmira
Union High school.
The Hood RiverChamber of
Commerce was granted authority
to install scenic signs on the
state highway in the Hood River
Valley. The signs will be in the
shape cf yellow apples with red
lettering.
OPINIONS ON OREGON LAWS
In answering questions for
opinions on Oregon laws made
by state officials Attorney Gen
eral Robert Y. Thornton recently
released the following:
The interest of a bank in a
merchant's inventory under a
trust receipt is superior to the
county's tax lean for prior taxes
for prior years.
Acts barring women from par-
ticipating in wrestling matches
and exhibitions, if based on state
of facts that reasonably could
sustain them, would not violate
constitutional requirements for
preserving due process of law,
equal protection of the laws and
equal privileges and immunities.
Within its police power, the state
may clarify occupations and pur
suits as forbidden to women.
Article XI-D of the Oregon Con
stitution was adopted for the pur
pose of authorizing the State of
Oregon to engage in the power
business and did not abolish ex
isting Hydro-electric Commission.
Abank or trust company may
not make a loan in an amount
in excess of 10 per cent of its
paid-up and unempaired capital
even though such loan is secured
by readily marketable stock and
bonds.
LIBRARY SEMICENTENIAL
Miss Eleanor Stephens, librar
ian of the Oregon State Library
left Tuesday for Philadelphia to
attend annual meetings of the
National Assn., of State Librar
ies, July 2 and 3, and the Na
tional Library Assn., which fol
lows. Miss Stephens will con
duct a panel on "The Role of
State Libraries" on the conclud
ing day of the national meeting.
The annual meeting of the
Northwest Library Assn., will be
held in Gearhart August 29-31.
The meeting will commemorate
the 50th anniversary of the
founding of the Oregon State Li
brary. This meeting will be at
tended by librarians from British
Columbia, Idaho, Montana, Wash
ington and Oregon.
Fat Hog Price
Again Climbs
HERMISTON Fred Hoskins,
Jr. and Raymond Wright of Hepp
ner received top prices at the
Hermiston livestock auction Fri
day, Dclbert Anson, manager of
the sale, reports. Hoskins was
paid $14.25 per hd. for seven
mixed weaner pigs and Wright
received $14 cwt. for five white
face cows weighing 4500 lbs. Hos
kins also consigned the largest
cow of the day, a 1355 lb. white
face cow which brought $11.10
cwt.
One more gain in the price of
fat hogs was scored Friday. The
30c cwt. rise to a top of $22.50
was in line with continued in
creases in Portland, where the
price was about the same, and in
Chicago where it was $2 lower,

were in continued good demand
and hog volume was up sharply.
Consigned were 296 hops, com

increased hog consignments
brought a 50c drop in weaner pigs

Needed next Friday, July 1, are
grain fed heifers and steers and
better finished grass heifers.
While Oregon and Washington
buyers were well represented,
and an unusual number of pack
ers attended, with feeders and
ranchers also contributing to the
broad and active demand Friday,
consignments were mostly small
odd lots. The feeders bought
stocker steers and heifers for
potato feedlots and ranchers
bought steers and heifers for ir
rigated pastures.
Calves: Baby calves 12.50-31.00
hd.; weaner calves, steer calves,
19.50-21.7o cwt.; heifer calves 16.-40-18.30;
