O KI ZU CAMP FIRE GIRLS
The O Ki Zu Camp Fire girls
spent two days and a nite in the
mountains at the Stockard's
cabin this week. Twelve girls left
at 1:00 o'clock Thursday and re
turned Friday at three.
They cooked their own meals
on hobo stoves or open fires,
waded, hiked and explored.
It was the first chance for na
ture study. Most of the girls
identified the required number of
plants and flowers for their hon
ors. Bird study and other types
of nature lore were enjoyed.
We also had a marked trail
hike and we tracked a deer for
one quarter of a mile to earn an
additional honor.
In the evening we held an out
door council fire, singing, acting
charades and making yummies.
Geraldine Swaggart, a new
member of the group, passed the
first rank requirements at this
time.
Most of the girls slept in the
open but two tents were taken
for those who preferred them.
Girlss going on the trip were
Judy Schmidt, Sandra Campbell,
Diane McCurdy, Libby Van Sch
oiack, Rose Marie Nash, Geral
dine Swaggart, Shirley Gaines,
Sharon Lindsay, Gay Saling and
two guests Jeannie Schmidt and
Shirley Van Winkle from the O
Ki Na Wanita group.
Mrs. Harlan McCurdy and Mrs.
Jack Van Winkle helped with
the transportation. Mrs. Al Vieg
and Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Schmidt
accompanied the group for the
entire trip. -

Vacationing Drivers
Urged to Slow
Down and Live"
With vacationing drivers now
taking to the highways in large
I numbers, secretary of state Earl
iT. Newbry warned recently that
I many may not reach their desti-
nations without mishap if last
! summer's accident experience is
repeated this year.
Newbry said 19,241 traffic ac
cidents were reported in Oregon
during May, June, July and Aug
ust last year, injuring 4,663 per
sons and bringing death to 133.
He said increasingly heavy
summertime car travel has estab
lished a new national accident
trend in which the summer
months have replaced the winter
season as the period producing
the greatest number of severe
traffic smash-ups.
The trend can be reversed this
year, Newbry said, if all drivers
would allow a few common-sense
rules of good driving, such as
planning your trip to allow
enough time for reaching your
destination without hurry.
He suggested frequent rest stops
to had off driving fatigue, adding
that the key to a safe and pleas
ant trip is expressed in the slo
gan, "Slow Down and Live."
