spoke in West Linn last Friday
noon, in the evening at Corvallis
and at noon Saturday in Salem.
Excerpts at the Salem address
include:
"We will have to keep ahead of
the Russians in our brain power
because we can't keep ahead of
them in manpower."
He said in case of attack we
may be living in tents in the
mountains and for that reason he
advocated roads crossing the
mountains into Idaho.
"The 'partnership' advocates
claim their plan is the speediest
if not the only way of obtaining
Couger and Green Peter dams.
"But the Ellsworth partnership
bill is an invitation to delay. The
language of the bill contains
'more 'ors', 'ifs', 'ands', and Twts'
man an unpreparea nign scnooi
student's recitation. It contains
no effective time limit in which
the partner has to produce and
, make good. It adds several new
procedural steps to the regular
' appropriation procedure which
i cannot help but waste time."
EMPLOYMENT UP SLIGHTLY
Non-farm employment totaled
231,200 in the Portland-Vancou
ver area during March, compar
ing with 229,400 the previous
month and 230,600 a year ago.
Construction put on 300 workers
during the 30 days, jumping to
11,500, about 400 higher than last
year.
Trade jobs were estimated to
be the same as a year ago but
700 over February. Textiles and
food processing also improved
slightly but most industries eased
off somewhat.
Average weekly earnings of
production workers declined 69
cents from the previous-month to
$79.85 but were $3.62 higher than
early in 1954. Shorter hours cut
pay of lumber workers to $77.43
a week. Printing and publish
ing employees were fewer in num
ber but put in longer hours to
average $104.64 a week for the
highest figure yet shown in this
industry.

D. C, within hours after adjourn-1
ment of the legislature. He was

will be met by Mrs. Olson. From

tinued demand, the fatter veal
bringing $28 cwt., up 75c. Other
price increases included baby
calves, $33 hd., up $1; stocker
steers, $18.20 cwt., up30; feeder
steers, $20.40 cwt., up 10c; fat
heifers, $20.50 cwt. up 40c; dairy
cows, better quality, $172.50, up
$2.50 hd.; stock cows, better
quality, strong demand, $157.50
