GAY NINETIES MOTIF CARRIED OUT
AT EASTERN STAR ANNIVERSARY
The 60th anniversary of Ruth
Chapter No. 32, Order of the East
em Star and Friendship night
was held Saturday, May 7, in the
Masonic hall at Heppner with
Mrs. C. C. Carmichael, worthy
matron, and Paul Jones, worthy
patron, presiding in the East
Many guests from chapters in
Elgin, The Dalles, Pilot Rock;
Pendleton, Hermiston, Umatilla,
Echo, Fossil, Arlington, Sweet
Home, Portland and lone attend
ed the' evening meeting.
Among those honored and pre
sented in the East were Mrs
Hazel M. Foster, past worthy
grand matron, Pendleton; Mrs.
Laurose Hibberd, associate grand
conductress, Imbler; Mrs. Rachel
Jackson, chairman of jurispru
dence committee, Hermiston;
Mrs. Frances Ebert, member of
appeals and grievance committee,
Echo, visiting worthy matrons
and worthy patrons and a special
guest, Miss Ona Gilliam.
The program included the in
vocation by the Rev. J. Palmer
Sorlien, Portland; a drill by
eleven Rainbow girls in costume
who formed the figure 60 and the
letter F for friendship and sing
ing by the audience of "Memor
ies" and "Auld Lang Syne".
The friendship addenda was
presented by Mrs. Paul Jones,
Mrs. Carmichael, Mrs. Harold
Becket, Oliver Creswick and Mrs.
William Smethurst Following
two vocal solos by Mr. Creswick,
Mrs. Frank S. Parker gave a his
tory of Ruth chapter. Frank
Sloan, Hermiston spoke on char
ter members, including his par
ents Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Sloan,
who were among the original 34.
Two charter members now living
are Mrs. Rebecca Patterson, For
est Grove, and Mrs. Margaret
Horner Reed, Portland.
Old time songs were sung by a
barber shop quartet composed of
Del Jordan, Harry Bell, Harold
Becket and Jeff Carter accom
panied by Mrs. Charles Ruggles,
all of whom were dressed in gay
ninety costumes. An addenda
"As Time Rolls On" was present
ed by the present officers with
the assistance of Tom Wells as
Father Time.
Miss Ona Gilliam was present
ed with a 50-year jewel from the
chapter in a special ceremony
given by eight lodge members.
In charge of the dining roomi
and refreshments were Mrs.
James Thomson, Mrs. Claude Gra
ham and Mrs. Frank Wilkinson.
Pouring were Mrs. Charles Vau
ghn, Mrs. Earl Gilliam and Miss

Head Soroptimist
Club For Coming Year
Election of officers for the
coming year was held at the So
roptimist club business meeting
Thursday noon at O'Donnell's.
The new officers are president,
Mrs. E. E. Gonty; vice president,
Mrs. Robert Penland; treasurer,
Mrs. Grace Nickefson; recording
secretary, Mrs. Harold Sanders
and corresponding secretary,
Mrs. Philip Blakney
Mrs. " Frank Hamlin and Mrs.
Roice Fulleton were welcomed
as new members of the club and
Mrs. Christie Corbett who is with
the State Board of Health was
introduced as a guest.
Committee reports were given
and the bulletins were distribut
ed. It was reported that forms
for application for the scholar
ship has been sent to the senior
girls and plans for a card party
were discussed.
Bluebirds Have
Tea For Mothers
The Jolly Bluebirds gave a
Mother's tea Saturday May 7 at
the Christian church.
Mary Ann Johnson welcomed
the mothers and Patty Mahon in
troduced the numbers on the pro
gram. Cheryl Hartman played a
piano solo, Swinging Along; Judy
Bradford and Diana Fulleton gave
a soft shoe tap dance; Ginger
Springer read a poem', Mother,
and Marlene Fetsch played two
piano selections, TaRa Ra Boom
De Ay and To My Valentine,
which she dedicated to the mo
thers. The table was decorated with
pink carnations and daffodils
and the cakes were decorated
with Mother's Day motifs.
The girls served the refresh
ments to the mothers present
who were Mrs. James McCabe,
Mrs. Al Fetsch, Mrs. Herb Hamil
ton, Mrs. Bill Barratt and Mrs.
Roice Fulleton. Each mother was
presented with a pink carnation.

Unit Meets at Drake

Miss Beverly Bradshaw was
guest during the day. The group
voted to provide a one half scho
larship for 4-H summer school.

Legion Auxiliary
Plans Poppy Sale
The American Legion auxiliary
met Tuesday evening at the
home of Mrs. John Hartman with
Mrs. Don Bellenbrock as co
hostess. . Mrs. Creston Robinson and Mrs.
Jack Bailey were elected to the
nominating committee.
Plans were made for the poppy
sale to be held May 27-28 with
Mrs. William Heath as chairman.
Refreshments were served at
the close of the meeting to about
12 members present. -
Sand Hollow Hosts
Elks Ladies Night
Thirteen tables of cards were in
play at the Elks ladies night
party Thursday evening.
Mrs. Harlan McCurdy held high
score in bridge with Mrs. Frank
Turner, second. In Pinochle Mrs.
John Bergstrorn was high and
Mrs. Everett Keithley, second.
Mrs. Fidelis Unrein received the
door prize. .
Women of Sand Hollow district
were the hostesses, they were

Miller, Bob Kilkenny, Roy Oiwick,

Young Maggie", accompanied by
Mrs. Charles Ruggles; short talks
by the Rev. Lester Boulden, Dr. A.
D. McJ.lurdo, Mrs. Mary Van Stev
ens and Mrs. Veima Glass and a
vocal solo by Oliver Creswick,
with Mrs. Ruggles accompanist.
A signed guest book was present
ed to Mrs. Rodgers.
Don Griffith Weds
Redmond Girl
Miss Joann P. Toll, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Toll, Red
mond,, became the bride of Don
Jay Griffith, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Jay Griffith, Heppner, at cere
monies performed April 23 at the
Methodist parsonage with the
Rev. Lester D. Boulden officating.
Attendants were Miss Rene
Griffith, sister of the bridegroom,
and Lec iard Toll, brother of the
bride.
Following a wedding reception
the couple left for a brief honey
moon and. are now at home in
Fossil where he is employed. The
bride is a graduate of Redmond
Union high school and the bride
groom was graduated from Hepp
ner high school.

Annual Card Party j
At the Women's Auxiliary of the
Episcopal church meeting held,
Monday evening in the parish!
hall, plans were made for the
annual birthday card party to be,
held on Saturday June 4 at 2:00 :
p. m. in the parish hall.
Mrs. Grace ftickerson was
named chairman of the party
and with her committee will com
plete the final plans.

Campfire Girls Give
Tea For Mothers
Eleven members of the O Ki-Zu
campfire girls entertained their
mothers with a tea Monday af
ternoon at the Christian church
and 13 Oki-Wa-Nita campfire
girls honored their mothers with
a tea Tuesday afternoon at the
Episcopal church.
Refreshments were made and
served and decorations arranged
by committees of each of the
groups.

Sorlien Speaks at
Rebekah Meeting
Sans Souci Rebekah lodge met
Friday May 6 with the regular
officers in the chair.
The draping of the charter for
Charles Barlow was done by the
officers of the lodge.
Ilev. J. ralmer Sorlien, grand
warden of the grand lodge of Ore
gon, was present and gave a talk.
A gift of money was voted to be
sent to Camp Columbia Boys
Town.
Refreshments were served after
the meeting by Mrs. Merle Kirk
and Mrs. Rufus Piper.
