This may be more costly than sur face irrigation, Shearer explains, "but it will definitely save wa ter." On high deseht soils with short growing seasons, use of sprinkler irrigation may not be profitable. Shearer recommends a cost an alysis, in such cases, before equipment is purchased. Farmers can obtain advice from their county extension agent or other qualified irrigation advisers. 4. Don't try to run water too far. Sandy soils require runs of 300 feet or less. Heavy water loss also occurs in canals and feeder ditches link ing farms and water reservoirs where group action is required for moisture conservation. Shear er estimates an annual loss of iy4 million acre feet of water enough to irrigate one-fourth of Oregon's irrigated land before it reaches the farm. Such losses can be reduced in part by cleaning debris from the ditches and controlling velocity So that water moves as rapidly as possible without scouring or causing erosion. Shearer also recommends spraying ditch banks to kill brush that uses the! water and also interferes with the flow, and sealing sections of j canals where losses are especial- . ly heavy. Satisfactory sealing materials include bentonite, con- crete, asphalt-impregnated ma terials, and clay soil where it Is readily available. o HEPPNER-BUTTER CREEK LIVESTOCK CLUB The March meeting was held at the home of Eb Hughes. Bill Brannon, reporter o Power Use Shows Big Jump in 1954 On Pacific System Customers of Pacific Power & Light company increased their use of electricity more than 10M per cent during 1954, according to the company's annual report now being received by stockhold ers. Rural customers led all others with a gain of 14.3 per cent. At the same time the average year- !' household use of electric ser- vice on the Pacific Power system reached 5622 kilowatt hours, or nearly 2'i times the national average. Revenues grow 8.2 per cent over 1953, to reach $39,952,000. Net income for the year, before pro vision for deferred income taxes resulting from accelerated amor tization of the Yale hydro project, was $7,989,000, and after such provision was $5,780,000. More than 3900 new electric customers were served from Pa cific lines during the year, bring ing the yearend total to 161,873. In addition, the company serves 12,500 water customers, 9320 tele phone customers and 1029 steam customers. Total payroll for the year, including construction, amounted to $11,316,000, and di rect taxes totaled $5,550,000. In addition, with three neighbor ing electric companies, it is studying other hydro sites with a potential capacity of 1,100,000 kilowatts.
