And when a few days are flown And the last lingering sand is gone With Jesus nigh How blessed then to lay me down and die. It seemeth such a little way to me To th'at strange country, the Beyond And yet, not strange for it has grown to be The home of those of whom we are so fond. Again that unwelcome yet re lentless visitor, death, hath en tered the portals of our lodge room and summoned a dear bro ther to the beautiful home be yond. R. Tash, PNG January 13f 1955 Social Security Farmer Benefits Reviewed by OSC Most farmers and farm work ers in Oregon are affected by am endments to the federal social security law passed by congress in 1954, reports Manning Becker, farm management specialist at Oregon State college. The law now brings federal old-age and survivors insurance to most farm families. Beginning this month, persons who farm for themselves will be included in social security if they make as much as $400 a year profit from their farming opera tions, the specialist explains Farm workers are included if they are paid cash wages of $100 a year or more by any one far mer. Farm earnings may now count toward social security benefits for County Agent News -. While we aie talking livestock, United States is the largest meat producer in the world. It is also the largest consumer. On a per person basis though, it seems that some people in foreign coun tries like meat even more than we Americans do. During the past two years, each person here in the United States has eaten pn average of 154 pounds of red meat a year, but the people of Uruguay averaged 218 pounds of meat eaten per person last year. Australians ate 215 pounds, the people of Argentina ate 190 pounds, New Zealanders 186 pounds and the Danes 175 pounds per person. On the other hand we eat less than one-half as much lamb and mutton as we do of veal and much less than either pork or beef. Out of this estimated 154 pounds of meat eaten by each person in the Uni ted States, this year, only 4.3 pounds were lamb and mutton. These benefits are in monthly payments in old age, and month ly payments to survivors in case of the breadwinner's death. A lump sum payment will also be made at the time of an insured person's death, at any age. This payment may range from $90 to S255, says Becker. Farmers must have worked un der social security for at least Us years before being entitled to any of its benefits. These benefits are payable to a retired Individ ual at the age 65 or to his sur vivors. The specialist points out that these benefits aren't paid auto, matically, however. It Is neces sary to claim them. Information on how to do this is available from local social security offices. The first thing farm operators and workers should do is get social security cards if they don't already have them, stresses Becker. Social security, like income tax, is now compulsory. The farm operator has the dual responsi bility of reporting his own earn ings at the end of each year at the time he files his income tax return, and the wages he paid his farm employees. Farmers are to pay 3 percent social security tax on their net earnings from the farm. However, no tax is paid on earnings of over $1200 during a year. To simplify reporting, a farmer is allowed to report one-half of his gross in come if this isn't over $1800. If his gross income is over $1800 during a year, he must report his actual net income. If the net in come is less than $900, he may have the option of reporting $900. The Farm operator is required to withhold 2 percent of each of his employee's pay up to $4200 annually. He must match this amount and make a report to the director of internal revenue BUSINESS-PROFESSIONAL DIRECTORY 4. FRED L. GRONEMYER, D. M. D.
