Of Rurol Service
Need for more ministers, teach
ers, doctors and other profession
al workers to serve rural com
munities with pride rather than
loss of prestige in not "moving
up" to more populated areas key
noted this year's Oregon Town
and Country Church conference
at Oregon State College.
More than 225 ministers and
l:.v loaders representing 19
church denominations in Oregon
heard nationally-known church
and farm leaders attack the prob
lem that rural communities are
too often "stepping stones" for
young professional workers or
"pastures" for older persons who
have not succeeded in the city.
Rev. Shirley E. Greene, Denver,
said we must "plow back" into
rural communities each year at
least 100,000 of the nation's best
president, Judy Howton; vice
president, Grace McCabe; secre
tary, Mardine Baker; news re
porter, Peggy Allen, song leaders,
Karen Lundell and Brenda Town
send.
There are 10 members in our
club. Ruth McCabe and Betty
Carlson are our leaders.
Ruth McCabe is taking the
group who will be using patterns
and Betty Carlson is taking the
ones who don't.
At this meeting we looked and
discussed patterns.
Grace McCabe served cake and
ice cream after the meeting.

At Nyssa the girls were guests
at a night football game and
dance.
The theme of the conference
was "United we work for better

Nyssa and 15 schools were repre

The guest speaker was Mrs.

vocational work including
farming. The speaker', inter
group relations director for Na
tional Farmers Union, said such
action is necessary to maintain
rural areas as the basic source j
oi loon ana ciouuiih anu as un
"seedbed' of population.
George E. Wilson, president of
California Farm Bureau Federa

Cattle, Wool and
Pork Outlook Bulletin
Issued by College
Continued large cattle market
ings with prices staying about
the same or slightly lower seem
likely in the year ahead, say
extension agricultural economists
at Oregon State college in the
latest "Agricultural Situation
and Outlook"-circular.
Larger wool returns can be ex
p ected under new farm legisla
tion, but increasing hog numbers
point toward even lower .prices
for producers.
M. D. Thomas, OSC economist,
A requirement of a rural
minister, he stated, is a sense of
dignity for his assignment and
respect for rural communities
and farm people.
Rev. William B. Spofford, Pay-
ette, Idaho, advised ministers to
worry less about total numbers in
the congregation and more about
what the church was offering
them. "We should not lie ecclcsi-j
:istical 'scalo-hunters' or entre
preneurs in the 'numbers racket'.
Do we add numbers to our church
to glorify God or to massage our
own egos?" He is director of Na
tional Town-Country Church In
stitution, Western extension cen
ter. The conference, now in its
eighth year, is sMnsored by Ore
gon's major church associations,
farm groups, Oregon State col
lege, and Oregon Home Econo
mics extension council.
