Cattle, Hog Price
Picture Dimmed
By Large Supplies
Large National supplies of cat
tle and hogs brought a warning
this week from Oregon State Col
lege economists for Oregon live
stock producers to figure closely
for the coming fall and winter.
A large pig crop is now point-,
ing to 10 percent more pork this'
fall than a year ago. Prospects!
for a one-third drop In hog prices
by October will discourage farm-
ers from holding fat hogs as long
as last year. The economists be- i
lieve hog raisers are almost cer
tain to be producing for a falling
market for the next two or three
years.
"Don't he in too big a hurry to:
buy feeder cattle," caution the
economists. They explain that
feeder prices may not hold in the
face of larger pojk supplies and
record numbers of cattle and cal
ves. Movement of stockers and
feeders into Corn Belt states dur
ing the first half of this year was
nearly 40 percent greater than a
year earlier. It looks like a good
year for cow-calf operators to
turn cull cows and common feed
ers early even though pasture
and range are good.
The economists offer these tips
to cattle feeders:
1 Save on feed costs by buy
ing needed hay and grain at har
vest time.
2. Figure fat cattle prices a

Cattle Demand
Holding Strong
HERMISTON Fred Hoskins Jr.
topped the market at the Hermis
ton livestock auction with a 490
lb. heavy calf selling for $19.20
cwt., Delbert Anson, manager of
the sale, reports. J. Wlghtman of
Heppner consigned 7 lambs
weighing 760 lbs. that sold for
a top of $17.20.
Demand w a s surprisingly
strong for all types of cattle. This
was apparently due to area pack
ers being in short supply to meet
the strong harvest-season con
sumer demand for meat. Prices
were generally steady to slightly
higher.
Volume of cattle was up slight
ly, 251 compared with 237 the
previous Friday. Also consigned
were 145 hogs, compared with 112
and 77 sheep, compared with 13.
Some new Washington packers,
in addition to regular Oregon and
Washington packers, Washington
feeders an da few farmer buyers
contributed to the strong demand.
Consignments were again of odd
lots but of better quality than.the
prev ious week. A bigger consign
ment of hogs brought higher
prices, fat hogs up $1.30 to $24.30
and sows of better quality and
size up $3.05 to $19.30, increases
in line with other markets and
due in part to higher quality. A
few short fed steers, the first In
some time, brought $22.00 cwt.
Veal was up $1.75 to a top of $19.
50, heifer calves up $1.20 to $18.20.
Feeder steers stayed in a narrow
range, $18.25 $19.75, up 15c.
In continued demand at the
next sale Friday will be top grade
fat steers and heifers, top veal for
packers, and more fat and feeder
lambs.
Calves: Baby calves 11.00-21.00
hd.; weaner calves, steer calves
16.75-19.50 cwt., heifer calves 15.
1048.20; veal 17.75-19.50.
Steers: Stocker steers 16.75-18.-10;
feeder steers 18.25-19.75; fat
slaughter steers 19.75-22.00; fat
heifers 16.10-18.00.
Cows: Dairy cows 90.00-125.00
hd.; dairy heifers 24.00-36.00 hd.;
stock cows 115.00-122.50 pr.
Slaughter cows: Commercial
12.25-13.75 cwt.; utility 10.75-11.-
little lower than those of the past
season as a basis for bidding on
feeders.
3 Short-feeding could be safer
than long-feeding this year, so
use good feeders in good condi
tion. Later in the season, com
mon feeders in poor condition
could do best if prices spread as
Ihey did last year.
The situation is analyzed in the
this1 current issue of "Oregon Agricul
I tuial Situation and Outlook" cir
cular now available from county
extension offices.
