Monument Legion, Auxiliary Elect Officers for Year

The Legion officers elected as
follows: Ivan Enright, command
er; Joe Mellor, sire commander;
Mend Oilman, adjutant; A. C.
Owings, service officer; Jack
Sweck, seargeant-at-arms;
Mr. and Mrs. Karl Sweek and
daughter Carol left Wednesday,
May 2(ilh for their new home near
Oregon City. The Sweeks sold
their home and pastime in Monu
ment the first of the year to Mr.
and Mrs. Owen Smith, hut kept
possession of the house until the
school was out. The Smiths have
been living in Joe Elders home,
but moved to their new home im
mediately after the Sweeks left.
Harold Cork took a truck load of
the Sweek's household goods to
their ranch near Oregon City for
them. The Sweeks are old timers
in Monument and both took an
active part in all civic affairs. Mr.
Sweek was one of Monument's
city councilmen and was very in
fluential in getting the streets
graded and graveled. Mrs. Sweek
took an active part in 4 II club
work. Their many friends here
wish them the best of luck in
their new home.
Mr. and Mrs. Morris Wedge
worth of Tracy, California visited
last week with Mr. Wedgeworth's

brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs.
Jim Wedgeworth. They were ac
eompanied by Glenn Marshall.
Mr. and Mrs. Mike Hutcheson
are moving this week into one
of the Daisy Riley houses.
Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Hinton and
daughters, Sharon and Mary Ella
and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Durst
spent May 20th in Heppner. Mr.
Durst and Mary Ella both re
ceived medical aid.
Mr. and Mrs. George Stirritt and
Mrs. Mamie Ferguson attended a
family dinner last week at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Johns
in Fox. The dinner was in honor
of Mrs. Johns' aunt, Mrs. Frankie
Williams.
At the Spray Rodeo the horse
Floy Strange was riding was
struck by another horse. Both Floy
and the horse was thrown, for
tunately Floy escaped without
serious injury but the horse was
badly hurt, it had to be killed.
Lor in C. Stoffer of Portland was
buying cattle in Monument and
Long Creek areas last Tuesday
and Wednesday.
Ben Spain, manager of the
Columbia Power Co-op in Monu
ment, spent last weekend in Spo
kane, Washington and Coeur
d'Alene, Idaho,
Mrs. Naomi Hooker and Mrs.
Clinta Mellor held their sewing
classes at the Grange hall Friday
afternoon. Those attending were:
Thelma Williams, Louisa Flem
ing'Edylhe Batty, Joava Enright,
Choicey Vandetta, Betty Weaver,
Kale Enright and Millie Wilson.
Each cut out a shirt. They will
teet again next Tuesday to sew
on them.
Mrs. Goldie Round and Mrs.
Lottie Foss came from John Day
last Wednesday, They report Mr.
Round as slowly improving.
Jeannie and Deanna Williams
will attend vacation Bible school
at John Day for the next two
weeks.
Rolfe Van Bibber of North Bend
arrived in Monument Friday
evening to visit old friends.
Monument was Mr. Van Bibber's
home for a good many years. At
one time he owned a garage in
Monument. That was before the
town burned. From here he will
go to Incheleam, Washington to
visit 'a sister, Mrs. Fred Putnam.
Frank King of Round Basin was
attending to matters of business
in Monument Friday morning.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Kimmell Sr.,
and daughter Mary Lee arrived
by plane in Pendleton May 21th.
They were met by their son and
brother, Rev. Paul Jr. They re
turned to Monument via Heppner
and visited Mrs. Kimmell Jr. and
baby daughter, Katherine Ann, at
the Memorial hospital. Katherine
Ann, is the Kimmell's second
child but first daughter. She was
horn at 11 a. m. Monday morning
and weighed 7 lbs. and 9 ozs.
The Kimmells all drove back to
Heppner on Tuesday to again
visit Mrs. Kimmell and baby.
Vernon Peterman, principal of
Monument grade school and his
wife Alene, left May 26 to spend
their summer vacation visiting
eastern points. Mrs. Peterman's
mother, Mrs. Katie Hinton drove
them to Pendleton where they left
by plane for Washington D. C.
They will also visit in New York
and other points of interest. In
Detroit they expect to buy a new
car and drive it home.
Dale Russell, principal of the
Monument high school and wife,
Mary, and sons Douglas and Jim,
left May 2Gth for their former
home in Pennsylvania to spend
their summer vacation.
Mrs. Willis, high school assist
ant teacher left Friday. Boyd
Hinton took her as far as Day
ville, where she took a bus for
Portland.
Darrell Hawes, Monument's
high fchool coach left Thursday
for his home in Bend.
Mr. Geckler and his mother
both grade school teachers left on
Friday for their home in La Gran
de. The grade school children, from
the first grade to the seventh,
had their annual school picnic
at the picnic grounds on the
Henry Cupper ranch. Several
mothers as well as the teachers
accompanied the children.
The ladies of the II. E. C. held
their regular meeting at the home
of Louise Fleming on Wednesday.
