Volume, Prices
Up at Hermiston
HERMISTON Oren Brace of
Heppner topped the market at
the Hermiston livestock auction
Friday with a 1150 lb. registered
Angus bull, which sold for $16.10
cwt, Delbert Anson, manager of
the sale, reports.
Volume was up sharply and the
prices generally stronger. Four
new highs were set at the sale.
Anson reported, the highest
prices in almost a year being
paid. Drawing the top prices
were O. O Brace, lone, receiving
$21.80 cwt. for a short-fed grain
fed Angus steet weighing 1020
lbs.; another lone consigner, Dar
rel Padberg, who drew $24.50 cwt.
for a 240 lb veal; Bruce Holt, of
Stanfield, 9 feeder pigs, 735 lbs.,
$31.25 cwt., up $3.00; and C. M.
Jackson, Hermiston, 1 red cow,
1020 lbs., $15.50 cwt.
Consigned were 526 cattle,
compared with 189 the previous
Friday, 122 hogs, compared with
48, and 748 sheep, compared with
210. One consignment consisted
of 582 head of breeding ewes,
which went for $16.25 per head.
Contributing to strengthening
of the market was return in em
phasis from poultry to meat, af
ter the Thanksgiving to New Year
poultry season, and the need to
replenish meat lockers of the
northwest, depleted over the holi
days in an effort to reduce year
end inventory to be declared for
taxes.
An unusual number of buyers
was present, and demand was
broad and active. A new Van
couver, Wash., packer was rep
resented, and both packer and
feeder buyers were numerous.
Quality was generally better, ex
cept for fat hogs, with better fin
ish and breeding stock represent
ed Breeding ewes were of usual
ly good quality. A few fed steers
graded good.
Cattle prices were generally
one dollar higher, hogs down one
dollar due to lack of finish. A
few registered stock cattle were
consigned.
Due to the sale Friday are more
registered cattle and good stock
cows. Sheep will continue in
strong demand at the semi-week,
ly sheep sale, and good and
choice grain fed steers are in de
mand. Calves: Baby calves 2.50-17.00
hd.; weaner calves, steer calves,
17.75-19.75 cwt.; heifer calves 16.-75-19.20
cwt.; veal 21.50-24.50.
Steers: Stocker steers 14.50-15.-85;
feeder steers 16.00-18.60; fat

heifers 17.10-19.50.
Cows: Dairy cows $102.50-190.-00

Newhry has reported.
Ncwbry said the reduced toll
this year, 90 below the 1952
count of 460, might also mean
that Oregon led the nation in
percent of death reduction for the
year. Whether a reduction oc
curred in over-all accidents and
traffic injuries will not be known
for some time, but state safety
men said it appears that acci
dents for the year numbered
about the same as in 1952 while
injuries may have increased
slightly.
Lowest post-war death toll oc
curred in 1919, when 356 persons
were killed The 1953 fatality
count may increase somewhat,
the Secretary cautioned, if de
layed reports are received or if
persons listed as injured later
die.
The month-by-month death
toll for Oregon shows: 35 in Janu
ary; 23, February; 28, March; 29,
April; 36, May; 29. June; 35, July;
20, August; 12, September; 25,
October; 27, November; and 25 in
December.
Mile for mile. January was the
worst traffic month with 7.8 per
sons killed in each 100 million
miles traveled, while August pro
duced the lowest mileage death
rate, 4.6.
Safety men said motorists
should "lake seriously the toll of
last January and make a concert
ed effort to reduce the count
this year". The best way to do
that, they said, is to adjust
speeds and other driving habits
to meet winter driving condi
tions. o
