Logging Effects
On Fish Streams
Studied at College
OREGON STATE COLLEGE
Chief result of logging operations
near a trout stream is the marked
increase in the amount of sedi
ment entering tho water, with
most of the sediment coming from
the building and use of logging
roads.
This was the conslusion reach-
.ed by Donald Wustenberg, Ore-
gon State college graduate stu-
dent, who recently completed a
study on the Influences of con-
trolled logging on a trout stream
in the II. J. Andrews experimental
forest of Lane county. He worked
in cooperation with the Oregon
Game commission, the U.i S. for
est service, Oregon Cooperative
Wildlife Research unit and log
gers. Wustenberg's survey was over a
two-year period on Lookout creek.
It is a headwater tributary to the
McKenzie river, one of Oregon's
best trout fishing streams. Ulti
mate goal of the study is to se
cure information which can be
used to develop improved man
agement practices in conjunction
with logging operations.
Contrary to popular opinion, it
is not the actual logging which
provides the major source of sedi
ment entering a stream but the
construction, use and mainten
ance of logging roads. Mainly
affected were the small tributar
ies of Lookout creek, which due
to small volumes of water pre
sent, were unable to transnort
large quantities of slash particals
and silt introduced into them.

were eliminated from three small
tributaries.
Wustenberg feels that methods
of eliminating a large amount of
the sediment going into Lookout
creek could be devised without
j undue cost. First, however, he
I believes there is a need to de
termine to what degree and in
what way the sedimentation is
jaffecting the productivity of the
imain creek.
Also to be determined is the
, biological role of small tributar
ies in relation to Lookout creek.
Protection of the tributaries from
logging disturbances similar to
that exercised on the main stream
would be almost impossible un
less deemed essential to the wel
fare of the main body of water.
