Specialist Advises
Oregon home owners ran guard
against winter fires by checking
for defective heating systems
now. Charles Ross, Oregon State
college forestry specialist, has Is
sued a check list with a warning
that one-fourth of Oregon's home
fires last year resulted from
stoves, furnaces, chimneys and
flues.
The OSC specialist says that
stoves and furnaces should be
examined for cracks, warn-out
fire boxes, and faulty oil flow
and firing mechanisms. Auto
matic mechanisms should be
checked by an expert.
Ross recommends a "smoke
test" to find chimney cracks or
'leaks. First, clean the chimney,
then build a smoky fire and place
I a wet blanket across the top of
the chimney. This will show up
the cracks which should be re
paired with cement mortar, he
explains.
Stove and furnace soot and dust
or lint sweepings in hot and cold
air pipes are all highly combust
ible and should be removed. Ross
says clean chimneys and flues
will also increase efficiency of
heating unit.

work. He adds that stovepipes
should be tight, free of holes and
well-supported.

OSC efforts, directed by Dr. K.
S. Pilsher, bacteriologist, are
aimed at finding compounds that
will influence either inhibit or
stimulate the normal metabol
isms and thus provide a lead for
more intensive work on the use of
the compound in a control pro
gram. Amino acid compounds, which
are near relatives of the proteins
found in the viruses, are being
tested at the present time. The
eggs constitute the "testing
grounds".
Mumps and flu viruses along
with the test compounds are
placed inside eggs by means of a
hypo-syringe that is pushed
through the air sac end. Once in
side the chick embryo the viruses
quickly multiply, according to Dr.
Pilcher.
After an incubation period of
48 hours for flu organisms and 4
to 5 clays for mump viruses, the
embryos are removed and anal
yzed to determine whether the
compound had any influence on
the virus development. A series
of different dosages are run for
each compound.
Amino acid compounds used in
this school of science project are
prepared under the direction of
Dr. Bert E. Christensen, professor
of chemistry. Graduate students
from the departments of bacter
iology and chemistry are also assisting.
Research is supported by a
grant from the Office of Naval
Research.
