GIRL SCOUTS LOOK BACK 40 YEARS. More than a million and
1 half Girl Scouts in every state are celebrating their organization's
10th anniversary during 1952. Founded in Savannah, Ga., March 12,
1912, by Juliette Gordon Low, Girl Scouting has grown continuously
in size and popularity through four decades. Although Girl Scouts
today wear trim green uniforms Instead of the bulky khaki outfits
if yesteryear, they haven't changed much in their Interests; home
making, camping, international friendship, nature study, and com
munity service have always been favorite activities.

California Seen
As Big Outlet
For Oregon Food
California is looming on the
marketing horizon as an increas
ing outlet for Oregon's farm pro
ducts, say two Oregon State col
lege extension staff members
who recently completed a market
survey there.
L. R. Breithaupt. retired econa
mist, and Paul Carpenter, mar
ket specialist, made the survey
intended to appraise current mar
kets and to project future ex
pansion possibilities. The infor
mation they gathered will be
used during the agricultural con
ference on the OSC campus on
March 27, 28 and 29.
California's greatest food needs
the two economists learned, are
meat, butter, cheese and wheat.
Other foods, less in demand but
important import items, are eggs,
chickens, canned and frozen veg
etables especially snap beans,
sweetcorn, green peas and ap
ples, cranberries, filberts, pota
toes and onions.
While short in some food pro
ducts, California is the number
one state in both cash returns
from farm marketings and popu
lation. Surpluses shipped to
markets elsewhere include citrus
and other fruits, walnuts and al
monds, early potatoes, truck
crops, cotton, dry beans, hops, la
dino clover seed and other items.
Not enough is produced of animal
products except wool and turkeys.
California's current population
of ten and one-half million repre
sents two thirds of the people liv
ing in the seven western states.
By I960, the population is ex
pected to be above fourteen mil
lion and will have reached seven
teen million by 1975.
The state's productive ability
to keep pace with this population
increase is tied in with water.
Although California's present five
million acres which receives sup
plemental water could be doub
led at considerable cost, expan
sion is not expected to keep up
with food needs.
For a recent year studied, 1,
173,000 head of cattle and calves
were imported, and they came
from 14 different states. Oregon
accounted for 7 per cent of the
total. During the same year, 1,
258,000 live sheep and lambs ar
rived from 11 states and Oregon
furnished 14 per cent of this total.
