Honored By Shower
Mrs. LaVerne Van Marter, Jr.,
was complimented at a stork
shower Wednesday evening at the
Thompson home on S. Court
street with Mrs. Alex Thompson,
Mrs. Fred Sanders, Mrs. William
Scrivner and Mrs. Robert Gam
mell as hostesses. The rooms
were attractively decorated in a
pink and pale green color scheme
with baby novelty containers and
bouquets of spring flowers. The
lace covered tea table was cen
tered with a large cake topped by
the traditional stork carrying the
baby bundle. Guests present

Men Hosts For
Rebekah Meeting
The Brothers of Sans Souci Re
bekah Lodge were hosts for the
social hour and program follow
ing the regular meeting Friday
evening. Tom Allen was chair
man with Jesse C. Payne, Emory
Settles, R. G. McMurtry and Dur
ward Tash assisting in arrang
ing the program and refresh
ments. During the lodge session,
three transfer candidates, Mrs.
Flory Nys, Mrs. Josie Jones,
and Mrs. Josephine Mahoney
Baker, were presented and wel
comed. A paper on the life and
accomplishments of Schuyler Col
fax, founder of the Order, was
read by Mrs. Clara B. Gertson.
Dick Scheriznger, representative
of General Mills, and his trained
chickens, "Henrietta" and "Elsie",
did several interesting tricks b
way of entertainment for the
group after lodge. The chickens,
of an ordinary breed chosen from
a common flock of chickens, had
been trained to do simple mathe
matical problems with the aid of
numbers and a mechanical point
er placed on a small board. They
also played the "shell" game and
a card game with Pete McMurtry
in which the hen came out win
ner. Mr. Scherzinger showed the
film "Larro Research Farm"
which told the story of the de
velopment of feeds for the vari
ous types of livestock. Initiation
for five candidates will be held at
the next meeting on April 4. Plans
were made to hold a joint meet
ing with the Oddfellows on April
25 in observance of the anniver
sary of the founding of the Odd
fellows Lodge. '

hostesses Friday afternoon for a
Stork shower at the Episcopal
Parish House complimenting Mrs.
George Rugg (Shirley Wilkin
son). A huge baby basket draped in
pink and blue with lace trim held
the gifts, being filled several
times. Following the enjoyment
of the many gifts of all kinds and
colors, Mrs. Lucy M. Peterson
sang "A Modern American Lul
laby" accompanied by Mrs. Elvon
Lee Tull.
Games were played with Mrs.
Peterson and Mrs. Stephen
Thompson receiving high scores

Hood River. Bouquets of daffo
dils were used on the table and

Easter Bonnets
The Soroptimist Club met
Thursday noon March 20 at O'
Donnel's. The table decorations
featured an Easter bonnet cake
in honor of Pearl Devine's birth
day. Claudien Wightman had charge
of the program which was a
style show of Easter bonnets. To
the Strains of "The Easter Par
ade", everyone present modeled
a new spring hat. Mary Van Stev
ens told how Irving Berlin hap
pened to write the words and the
music for 'The Easter Parade."

Gretchen Penland.

March 29, with a potluck dinner

the dining room benches and a
number of the husbands were
present to help with the work.

WE THE COMMITTEE, as
signed the duty of drafting a
written expression of condolence
on account of the passing of a
Sister to the life beyond, report as
follows:
WHEREAS, it is the plan of the
Almighty that man shall finish
his duties on this earth, and then
denart to the unknown; so it is
with the life and passing of our
beloved Sister Hattie A. Wight-
man, a member of Sans Souci Re
bekah Lodge No. 33 for many
years. Her passing is deeply re
gretted by our jodge and many
others of Heppner. Her beloved
family will mourn her absence,
but we would say to them that
their loved one only sleeps await
ing their arrival when they too
shall cross the silent river.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED
that we express our sympathy to
the bereaved family and be it
RESOLVED that a copy of these
resolutions be sent to the sister's
family, one copy spread on the
minutes of our lodge, and a copy
sent to the Heppner Gazette
Times.
