It's a good idea to be label-conscious
this spring when you're
buying yardgoods. Then if the
label doesn't say the material is
pre-shrunk, you know that it's
up to you to do it before you do
any cutting.
And here's how Maude C. Cass
well, Home Demonstration Agent
suggests you shrink cotton yard
goods. First, if the material hasn't
been cut straight, pull a cross
wise thread and cut along this
line. Be sure the material is
straight on both ends or you may
run into difficulties later.
Then re-fold the material, just
as it was when you took it from
the package. Soak it for an hour
or more in cold water, making
sure the water penetrates each
fold. If th nwterial wants to
float, dunk it sveral tinwa dur
ing the hour.
Keep it foloVd when you takt it
from the water. Press out as
much water as possible, without
wringing or twisting the fabric.
Finally, unfold the wet mater
ial carefully and loop it over two
clothes lines with out using
clothes pins. Keep the selvedge
edges together and straighten
the material if neeuVd. If you
smooth the wrinkles out carefully
by hand, you may not need to
press it.
If the selvedge shrinka more
than the fabric and it's puckering,
just clip the selvedge every six
inches. If it shrinks a lot and
clipping doesn't do any good,
you should trim the aelvedge
completely off each side.
After a good job of shrinking
