blems as the shy, immature
youngster. The kindergarten in
structor works with each young
ster in the level of his person
ality rather than on the level of
his scholastic ability, where his
grade school teachers must put
the emphasis.
The most important attitude
which kindergarten tries to teach
the child is responsibility for his
own behavior." He respects auth
ority and behaves because he
understands that that is his own
obligation.
Any teacher who is teaching
children rather than school wel
comes a good kindergarten back
ground in her pupils. Those
youngsters already made many
of their adjustments to the
school situation and to the other
children, and are respective to
learning. They are attuned to a
healthful normal schoolroom at
mosphere where they learn und
er an easy, stimulating atmos
here, where the teacher is pre
sent to help and to encourage
rather than to punish, restrain
and police.

ed into the Army and begins
training as an infantryman with
Co. K, 63rd Infantry Regiment,
6th Infantry Division, at Fort Ord,
California. Private Hughes at
tended the University of Oregon,
Oregon State, and graduated from
Woodburry College.
