High morale is tha great necessity of an
army. In maintaining the morale of the
American Army, the Red Cross must play
important part.
As our armed forces are increased in
numbers, the work of the Red Cross for
servicemen and their families and for hos
pitalized veterans must be correspondingly
increased. And in addition we are now
called on to coordinate the procurement ef
blood for all the armed services.
Just as our fighting men have Joined wltk
those of many nations to prevent aggressioa
and strive for, lasting seourity and peace,
so we, from all seotions, all groups and
all faiths, must Join together ia the de
fense of the ideals and the humanities thai

now under way. The Red Cross has been
oalled on to recruit and train 250,000
volunteer nurse's aides; hundreds of thou
sands of housewives in home nursing, and
20,000,000 men and women in first aid.
These are large numbers. They involve a
tremendous organized effort in which every
one of us must play a part. And in addi
tion, plans for emergenoy mass feeding,
shelter and clothing are being worked out
with local civil defense authorities.
These new responsibilities have been
acoepted by the Red Cross as a neoessary

positive aotion. When you are asked to
take part and to contribute, I feel sure
you will do so generously, for our country
needs the Red Cross, and the Red Cross
requires our support..
