Bill Reynolds Of
Monument Victim of
Shooting Accident

Bill Reynolds was accidentally shot
Saturday as lie was walking up a
mountainside to his work Dr. Jerry
and the ambulance from John Day
were called as soon as a man could run
to the nearest phone. There were sev
eral men workmK nearhy and they
carried him to Berhel Corbin's pickup
and a "cat" was used to push them
through the mud out to the county
road. They met the doctor and ambu
lance several miles on the other side
of Kimherly. From John Day he was1
flown to 1'ortland. Word was received
Sund:iv th;it he was in a very critical
condition but still holding his own.
His wife and children left early Sun
d;,v morning for Portland. Mr. Rey
nolds was shot by Tureman (."raddock,
a soldier hoy. home on a short leave.
The hoys were target shooting and the
general opinion seems to be that the
bullet must have hit a limb and rico
cheted to hit Mr. Reynolds.
Later Mr. Reynolds passed away
at the Providence Hospital in Port
land about eleven o'clock Sunday
night. He is survived by his wife Stel
la and three children, two sons and a
daughter. L. D. Vincent and Mrs. Rey
nold's sister. Lois Kuzek left here at
one a. m. Monday for Portland.
The women of Monument are having
a cooked food sale at the stores in
Monument this week. The funds will

The HeppnerGazette has a wide cir
culation. This week a card was received
from Mrs. Flo Beymer in San Francis
co, stating she enjoyed the Monument
items a.s well as the Heppner items.
Mrs. Beymer at times was a resident of
both places.
On December 4th Mrs. Chester Brown
entertained at dinner in honor of her
husband's birthday, also the birthday
of Miss Sharon Cupper. Those pres
ent besdes the honored guests were
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Cupper and sons.
Hankie and Jerry. Mr. and Mrs. Mor
ton Cupper. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Lea

Dick Williams helped Leo Flower
butcher hogs on Sunday,
last week from Mareth Merrill in San
Mrs. Iora Boyer received a letter
Francisco. He stated he was readv to
be shipped to Japan. His wife will go
to Texas to he with her parents while
her husband is overseas.
Mrs. Ida Bleakman returned to her
home on Sunday. She had spent the
last two weeks with her daughter and
son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Herb Hynd
of Cecil. Mr. and Mrs. Hynd and
daughter Carol brought Mrs. Bleak
man home.
Mr. and Mrs. Rho Bleakman and
daughters, Rhoena and Laura Lee and
Mifinda Musgrave were overnight
guests ot Mrs. Bleakman s parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Dave Musgrave at Mt.
Vernon on Friday. Both Laura Lee
and Mirinda had appointments with
the oculist in John Day Saturday
morning.
Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Cummings are
house guests of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis
Neal.
H. D. Hinton's sisters. Mrs. Ella
Durst and Mrs. Ivy Barnard state that
he is slowly regaining his strength.

He hopes to be able to move to his
brother Ben's home in the near future.
Mrs. Wave Jackson was taken to the
doctor Friday. It was found she was
suffering from pneumonia. She is at
her home now and recovering satis
actorily. Bin, the small daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Rho Bleakman spent the last two
weeks with her grandparents, Mr. and
Mrs. Dave Musgrave at Mt. Vernon.
She returned home with her parents
Saturday.
The grange held its social meeting
Friday night at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Lewis Batty. The party was in
honor of Clinton Batty's birthday.
Chet Round of Mitchell is home vis
iting his mother, Mrs. Josle Round
and other relatives.
Orin Stubhlefield of Portland is here
visiting his brothers. Oatis and Murd-
Ike Williams of Mt. Vernon was in
Monument this week visiting his sis
ter. Mrs. Oatis Stubhlefield.
The Monument high school volley
ball and basket ball teams played at
Mt. Vernon Saturday night. The girls
were victorious but the boys lost to
the Mt. Vernon team.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Shank and daugh
ter, Laura Lee, drove to John Day
Sunday to visit with Mrs. Shank's mo
ther. Mrs. George Stirritt.
The Sunday School program at the
Presbyterian church will be next Fri
day evening at seven o'clock. Several
of the grownups have volunteered tq
help with the program. Everyone is
cordially invited to this program.
Mrs. George Stirritt was taken sud
denly sick last Friday morning. Her
husband took her to a doctor at John
Day. '
Clarence Youman from John Day was
in Monument last Saturday attending
to matters of business.
