SUNDAY WORST TRAFFIC
DAY OF ENTIRE WEEK
Sunday topped all other days
of the week in traffic deadliness
in Oregon last year with 67 fatal
accidents, the state traffic safety
division reported.
Saturday ran a close second
with 60 fatal smash-ups, result
ing in a combined weekend traf
fic toll of 127 throughout 1949,
the division said. Least fatal
accidents were recorded on Tues
day, with a total of 25, and
Thursday, with 28.
Heavier rural highway traf
fic volume due to weekend driv
ing is the main underlying fac
tor, officials said, which in
creases the chances of mishaps
at high speed. Worst killers in
1949 were accidents in which a
car ran off the roadway, over
turned in the roadway, or struck
a fixed object, most of them due
to loss of controll at excessive
speed.

News from
G. A. Office
Applications for field inspec
tion of crops that will be certi
fied are being received at the
Countv Agent's office now. First
applications to be received were
from Frank Anderson, Heppner
who will have an acreage of Rio
wheat field inspected; Kenneth
Smouse, lone, Rex M-l wheat;
and E. F. Burlinham and Sons,
Forest Grove, on creeping alfal
fa seedings on the Harold Wright
and A. L. Lovgren farms.
All seed crops being produced
from seed certified last year are
eligible for field inspections. If
the crops pass the rigid standards
of field inspection they are then
eligible for bin samples to de
termine whether purity and ger
mination will allow seed to be
sold as blue tag certified.
Application blanks and fee
schedules are available from this
office. All farmers growing crops
from certified seed are urged to
complete application soon as cer-
titication specialists from Oregon
State college will soon be mak
ing inspections in Morrow coun
ty. Byrne Thrailkill, field super
visor, grasshopper and cricket
control, while visiting Morrow
county on Monday, reported that
the job of mopping up crickets
in North Morrow county was
being completed this week.
Cricket control work began in
early May when the bureau of
entomology's DC-3 plane baited
over thirty-three thousand of
acres of range land in northern
Morrow, Umatilla, and Gilliam
counties. Since that time ground
crews have been baiting small
areas not reached by the plane.
Mr. Thrailkill reported that crick
ets are hard to find in the range
area where the control program
has been carried out.
Grasshopper infestations have
been reported in some localities
and surveys are being made in '
areas where heavier infestations
were found last year.' Farmers
with grasshopper outbreaks wiii
want to apply the newer insec
ticides, chlordane or toxaphene
for best control. Information on
application of these insecticides
are vailable from this office.

It was a gift from 4-H boys and
girls there, and had been sent
by Miss Eunice Johnson, former
local 4-H club leader in Multno
mah county. Bud received an

2,055 in 1941. Only one other en

the annual 10-day session.
Among announcements made
during the current session was
one to the ettect that Miss Joan
Howell, Klamath county 4-H club

June 13. Their baggage however,
which was trucked down by

ald Baker, lone did not arrive
until about 10:30 p.m. Road con
