GAS REVENUE BOOSTED
BY ADDITIONAL TAX OF
ONE CENT PER GALLON
The one cent per gallon added
to Oregon's gasoline levy July 1
boosted 1949 gas tax revenue ap
proximately 12 per cent, Secretary
of State Earl T. Newbry reported
today.
Newbry said the Increase was
almost entirely due to the added
tax, since total sales for the year
were up less than two per cent.
After increasing approvimately 10
per cent each year since 1945, Or.
egon's travel mileage is appar
ently leveling off, he indicated.
The motor fuel tax division list
ed gross 1949 taxes at $26,293,
380.15, with refunds to non-highway
users of $3,041,448.09 and ad.
ministrative expenses of $106,325..
36. The highway fund netted $23,.
145,606.70.
Since the first gasoline tax was
levied February 25, 1919, a total
of S2S5.056.074.61 has been col
lected. Refunds have aggregated
$34,196,068.64 and administrative
expenses $S66,123.40, leaving a
balance transferred or awaiting
transfer to the highway fund of
$249,993,882.57.
