Swick Funeral Held
At Monument
Friday Morning

Funeral rites were conducted in
Monument at 10 o'clock a. m.
Friday for Howard Swick, with
Rev. Elvon L. Tull, vicar of All
Saints Episcopal church, Heppner,
officiating. Driskill's Mortuary of
John Day was in charge of ar
rangements. Interment was made
in the Oregon City cemetery at
10 a. m. Saturday. Those accom-

Funeral services were held for
Everett Hunt at 2 o'clock Wednes
day afternoon at the Monument
Community church with Rev. Sid
ney Harris, pastor of the Monu
ment church, officiating. Burial
was in the Monument cemetery,

Mrs. Delcie Sweek spent Iriday
Saturday and Sunday at the home
of her daughter, Mrs. Dons La
Don. Mrs. Sweek is still suffering
from a lame back and is unable

end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Wil-
lard Oilman.
Mrs. Ruth Swick and son Don,
Mrs. Anna Baylssi and Bob Swick
returned from Oregon City Satur
day evening and were overnight
guests of Mr. and Mrs. George
Stirrilt.
Mrs. Ella Durst was pleasant
ly surprised Saturday evening
when Mr. and Mrs. John Simas,
Mr. and Mrs. George Stirritt and
Mr. and Mrs. Chance Wilson came
to spend the evening and to wish
her a happy birthday The eve
ning was spent playing cards, af
ter which ice cream and wafers
were served.
The American Legion and aux
iliary had an enjoyable Christ
mas party at the grange hall

Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sweek left I
early Sunday morning for Port-1
land where he will attend his
Uncle ill bweck s funeral on
Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Bud Engle of
Court Rock spent Friday in Mon
ument. They attended the funeral
services for Howard Swick.
It truly is a sight to see the
whiskers of some of the men,
especially Charles Gilman, Spike
Miller and Mead Gilman Sr..
Mrs. Lulu Settle suffered a
heart attack on Wednesday. Bill
Settle sent an emergency call for
Dr. Gerry. The doctor responded
by flying to Monument. In pio
neer days it would have taken
two days of hard riding and driv
ing to get a doctor from John
Day to Monument. Times are
surely changing.
Frank McGirr and Hazel Hin
ton of Fox attended the funeral
rites for Howard Swick Friday.
Others from out of town attend
ing the funeral were Betty Round,
Oral Leathers, and tva Green of
Long Creek; Lew Morris and Mr.
and Mrs. Clark Morris of John
Day, and a group of brother Elks
from the Elks lodge at Heppner.
Carol Sweek is staying with
Mrs. Louisa Fleming while her
parents are in Portland.
Mr. and Mrs. Everett Howell of
Top attended the funeral services
for Everett Hunt Wednesday. They
called on Mr. and Mrs. Chance
Wilson while in town.

Mr. and Mrs. George Stubble
field narrowly escaped a serious
accident Friday. They were on
their way to John Day when one
of the front wheels on their car
came off. Luckily they were on a
straight piece of road, not ariving
too fast and not too far from
home. The wheel was damaged,
otherwise no damgae was done,
Emorv Moore and Spike Miller
left Sunday for Seattle where they
will go by plane to Alaska to get
a sawmill which the Heppner
Lumber company recently pur
chased for their mill site near
Pendleton. Moore and Miller will
dismantle the mill and prepare
it for shipment to Pendleton.
Mr. and Mrs. Gus Peterson of
John Day visited Mrs. Peterson s
mother, Mrs. Louise scott at top
on December 11.
Lee Fleming was a business
visitor in John Day Monday.
The MMM club held a Christ
mas social meeting Thursday at
the home of Mrs. Chance Wilson.
This was the Christmas meeting
and after a short business session
gifts were exchanged and games

ners. Mrs. Quinlin was guest of

Mr. and Mrs. Bill Elder of Vale
were visiting and attending to
matters of business in Monument
this week. They attended the
Howard Swick services Friday.
Monument grange enjoyed a
Christmas social meeting Friday
evening. Members and invited
iguests6were entertained by a pro-
gram put on by the children, sup
ervised by the lecturer, Clara
Flower. Bill Settle got the Christ,
mas dinner which was auctioned
off for the benefit of the grange.
Rev. and Mrs. Harris were pre
sented a Christmas dinner by the
grange. A potluck dessert dinner
was served by the ladies.
Rex Sweek and Daisy Simas
were called to Canyon City Friday
to serve on the grand jury: They
returned horn ethe same evening.
Jack Bixler of John Day and
Frank Turner of Heppner, accom
panied by Betty Simas, sang for
the funeral services of Howard
Swick.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Paee left

Dick Williams, Mel Rounds and

TS Jack Pittman returned to
Kinzua Sunday from Ookland,
Calif, where he was discharged
from the army. He had enlisted
for one year and is here visiting
friends and at his sister's home,
Mr. and Mrs. Al Rudd and family.
Jack is formerly of Kinzua.
Mrs. Geneva Garcia of San
Jose, Calif, is the house guest of
Mrs. Ruth Conner and will re
main through the holidays.
Mrs. Jack Owens and mother,
Mrs. Harve Boyer, were consult
ing a doctor in Fossil Saturday.
Mrs. Boyer has been ill the past
two weeks.
A number of basketball fans
went to Fossil Friday evening to
see the first game of the season
on the local floor between the
town teams of Condon and Fossil.
The game was a toss-up, with
Fossil getting the winning basket
the last few seconds. Score, 40-42.
The first game for the high
school boys will be Tuesday night
at Lexington.
James Loomis, assistant mfll
