J raveling salesmen were the
safest drivers in Oregon this year
according to the records of the
state traffic division. In their
1,984 reported accidents no fatali.
ties occurred. Clerical and retail
sales workers were next with
three fatal accidents in a total of
5,576 reported.
Housewives had the best record
last year but slipped tothe mid
dle of the rating this year, with
six of their 3,516 accidents result
ing in fatalities.
The worst record, from the
standpoint of severity, went to
larmers and farm workers, with
10 fatalities from 2,700 accidents
reported. Laborers had the great
est number of accidents but were
well below average in fatalities,
with 30 fatalities in 21,034 acci
dents. GUBERNATORIAL
APPOINTMENT
Governor Douglas McKay this
week appointed Colonel G. Robert
Dodson of Portland to the position
of chief of staff of the Oregon Air
National Guard and elevated the
45-yearold flying officer to the
rank of brigadier general, accord,
ing to Lawson McCall, Governor
McKay's executive assistant. I
Thus Dodson becomes the state
air guard's first general officer.
Major General Thomas E. Rilea,
Oregon's adjutant general who I
conferred with the governor on
the appointment, described Dod
son as a "top-notch pilot, officer
and person."
Dodson is presently in com
mand of the 142nd fiehter ernnn
the membership of which is di
vined between Oregon, Washing
ton and Idaho. When war broke
out, he was in charge of the 116th
air observation squadron of the
Oregon Air National Guard and
distinguished himself in service
on both sides of the world, mostly
in me Durma ineaier.
He is an executive of the Jantz
en Knitting mills of Portland in
civilian life.
BROTHER-IN-LAW DIES
A communication from Mrs.
Florence Hughes, states that her
brother-in-law, U. S. Pratt, died
December 4 at his home in Cen-
tralia, Wash. The Pratts were well
known to a number of HeDDner
residents, they havine visited
here on numerous occasions when
Mrs. Hughes resided here. Mrs.
Hughes has been making her
home at Centralia the past year.
