DECEMBER MONTH
OP GREATEST DANGER
TO PERSONS ON FOOT
December is the month of
greatest danger to pedestrians,
and drivers and walkers alike
nre belgn urged by Secretary of
Stale Earl T. Newbry to us ex
tra caution to avoid marring the
holiday season with needless tra
gedies.
Newbry pointed out that while
only 23 percent of Oregon traffic
deaths last year were pedestrians,
the proportion jumped to 41 per
cent In December. He cited longer
hours of darkness ram, and poor
visibility, streets thronged with
holiday shoppers, and more wide
spread drinking as the principal
factors increasing normal traffic
dangers.
Vision obscured bv armloads of
packages or umbrellas held low
over the head Is anothertOmmon
source of pedestrian mishap, the
safety official said.
"It's seldom the car you see
that hits you. It's the one you
don't see," he reminded.
Newbry urged motorists to be
sure all aids to visibility such as
windshield wipers, defrosters, and
lights, are properly functioning,
and to keep speeds well within
the safety margin. A few good
life-saving reminders for pedes
trians are:
1. Don't walk behind or in
front of a street car or bus im
mediately after alighting.
2. Always use crosswalks, safe
ty islands, and other safeguards.
Never cross in the middle of the
block. T
3. Don't depend on the driver
seeing you at night Wear or car
ry something light-colored to re
flect light. .
4. Never step into the roadway
from between parked cars.
5. If necessary to walk in the
roadway walk on the left side,
facing oncoming traffic.
6. After waiting for another cat
to pass, remember to look the
other direction again to be sure
the way is still clear.
