School Opening At
Irrigon Sept. 7;
Staff All Hired
The Irrigon school is to begin
September 7. Earl Golden is the
superintendent. The teachers are
to meet at the school house on
Monday morning, Sept. 6. M. T.
C. Reed is the band leader. He is
on a half time basis, and comes
well recommended, as well as
the rest of the faculty. Norris
Wissler of Minot, N. D., a grad
uate of the University of North
Dakota, is the commercial teach
er. One high school teacher and
the 7th and 8th grade teachers
are on the way here. Mrs. Homer
Hayes and Mrs. Benny McCoy
will teach the 4th, 5th and 6th
and Mrs. Ruth Kus.se! 1 and Mrs
Bessie Hobbs will teach the 1st,
2nd and 3rd grades.
Mrs. Don Houghton and small
son left for home in Denver and
Chicago after visiting her hus
band's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred
Houghton.
Mrs. Roscoe Williams of Port
land is vsiting with the Fred

Mr. and Mrs. Ora Thompson
attended the funeral of his ne
phew, Lloyd (Junior) Williams,
in Hermiston Sunday at 2 p.m.
Lloyd was drowned in the Uma
tilla Friday afternoon at the steel
bridge. He was a good swimmer,
had several boys with them. They
discovered something was wrong
but he sank before they could
reach him. He was not recovered
for two and a half hours. He was
17 years old.
Jack White went to Portland
Saturday.
John, Robert Smith and son
Steven and Vernon Jones and
Paul Slaughter returned home
from a fishing trip that was suc
cessful as they got the fish. They
went up into Idaho.
Tom Caldwell returned Friday
from Washougal where he had
been visiting with his sons for a
week.
Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Caldwell
and two sons came up from Wa
shougal to spend the week end.
They returned Monday, taking
his mother, Mrs. Tom Caldwell,
home to spend a few days.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Lane have
sold their farm to Mr. and Mrs.
Snyder of Denver. They have a
son 22 years of age.
Mr. and Mrs. Lane are leaving
Wednesday. They plan on visit
ing friends and relatives and
looking around for a while before
they settle down. They are bound
for the Portland area first.
Mrs. Doyle Ivy and two sons
have returned to Pasco to send
the children to school. Mr. Ivy
will stay on the farm.
Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Nichols
of Pasadena, Cal., and Mr. and
Mrs. Vernon Dillon of Laraine
were guests of the W. B. Dexters'
and the Paul Heberleins' Wed
nesday and Thursday.
Mrs. Beulah Hoefler of Los An
geles left for home Thursday af
ter visiting her uncle, Arthur
Lane, and Mrs. Lane.
Rev. A. B. Turner is driving a
new Hudson car that he purchas
ed last week. The Turners took
a load of Assembly of God mem
bers to Pilot Rock Tuesday to a
fellowship meeting. Mrs. Emma
Steward accompanied them to
Pilot Rock and on to Antelope
and Burns to visit the Otto Myers
and Glen O'Brien families.

Tuesday.
