TO ALL OTHERS WHOM IT MAY CONCERN : io anu -cn fr, ,. Cnurt House at ine in "jm ,,, n " --3 ' s & News From C. A. Office A new breed of chickens that Is beginning to receive considerable attention Is the Delaware that is designed for meat and egg pro duction with emphasis on meat for broilers. The Delaware was developed from sports or off colored chicks that occurred in the crossing of Barred Rock cockerels and New Hampshire hens. They have white feathers on the neck, and bar red primary and secondary wing and tail feathers. They have been quite popular for broilers because they are fast growing, rapid fea thering, have a plump breast, and white body feathers. The white body feathers eliminate the dark pin feathers. a While we are talking chicken it mieht be interesting to note that the average lay per hen for Oregon last year was 177 eggs. This is 19 more eggs per hen than the average for the United States. The average egg production in Oregon could be substantially in creased if producers would re place a much higher proportion of their flocks with a fresh sup- olv of pullets each year. On Jan uary 1, 1948, there were 3,149,000 laying hens in Oregon. Only 56 per cent were pullets and 44 per cent old hens. At least 75 per cent or more should be pullets because they will lay from 25 to 30 per cent more eggs than the old hens. e A preliminary survey report put out by the Oregon Wheat commission covering the 1947 wheat tax returns to date pro vides some interesting facts. This summary is made on 31 mil lion, seventy-six thousand bush els of wheat. Eastern Oregon counties pro duced 89 per cent of the commer cial wheat in the state. Breaking the report down to Morrow, Gil liam, Sherman and Wasco coun ties shows that these counties sold a total of five million, eigh ty-two thousand bushels.' Of this the percent of varieties grown showed Baart, one tenth of one percent; Federation, eighteen and two tenths percent; J?orty fold, three percent; Orofed, one half of one percent; Rex, twenty- five and nine-tenths percent; oth er soft white, five and seven tenths percent; Club (Elgin and Alicel), forty-one and one-tenth percent; Hard Red Winter, five and two-tenths percent; Soft Red Winter, onetenth of one percent; Hard Red Spring, twotenths of one percent. Smut was shown in 12 per cent of the Club and Golden varieties, in 4 percent of the Turkey and Federation and in 2.5 percent of the Rex. Morrow county's report hows 5 percent of the wheat sold as smutty. e e Jack Cavender, Rhea Creek, has just completed two large trench silos which he will use for stor age of his alfalfa hay. The alfal fa is being chopped in the field, hauled to the silo for ensiling. The use of grass and legume ilage is becoming more popular each year and In some sections of the Willamette valley all of the first cuttings of grass and le gumes are ensiled. Experiments with grass and legume ensilage show that more butterfat Is pro duced per acre than when made into hay, even if hay drying con ditions are perfect. It was also found that about 16 more milk per acre can be realized by feed ing alfalfa ensilage than by cut ting the crop for hay. Field dry ing of alfalfa hay gave 76 pounds less protein per acre than the sil age.
