In contrast to the many scarred
fields in Morrow county, washed
and gullied during the past win
ter, this field on the Frank An
derson ranch at Eightmile is evi
dence of practically complete ero
sion control by strip cropping.
These contour strips of wheat,
summer fallow and crested wheat
grass, along diversion ditches to
carry off the excess water safely
from the field, were established
in 1938 through the cooperative
effort of the Soil Conservation
Service and the Extension Ser
vice. Anderson states that he would
have been forced to discontinue
farming this field, due to severe
gullying and washing, if strip
ping had not been established.

News From
C. A. Office
Interest in weed control is run
ning high this past week and
many farmers who had not in
tended to spray or dust annual
weeds are now planning to do
so. Those farmers who have been
working on booms and spraying
equipment during the winter
months are prepared to begin
work. Today (Wednesday) the
weather is ideal for applying
2,4-D and it appears as though
many farmers will get started to
spray and dust this week if the
weather continues to be favor
able. Warm growing weather Is
most favorable for the fastest and
most efficient kill of annual
weeds.
Several farmers have applied
spray and dust with effective re
sults, even though we have had
no favorable days for application.
Vernon Munkers, Lexington, is
the first farmer that I know of
to apply 2,4-D. The first applica
tion was made on March 5 with
very good results obtained after
several observations of the fields
treated. This sprayer, with 40-foot
boom, was adapted to the Job by
a group of Social Ridge farmers
including besides Mr. Munkers,
Kenneth Peck, Bill Van Winkle,
and Roy Campbell and sons. This
machine had sprayed approxi
mately 600 acres by Monday,
March 22. Other farmers who the
agent has observed spraying or
dusting with 2,4-D are Julian
Rauch, Nelson Brothers, J. C.
Ransier, Bill Seehafer, Lawrence
and Kenneth Palmer, and Ralph
Beamer. Undoubtedly others are
or have sprayed or dusted the
past week.
A few reminders on spraying
and dusting are timely. (1) In
spraying, it is recommended that

application be made at the rate
of 10 gallons of water per acre.
(A gallon or two one way or the
other will not harm as long as
the proper amount of 2,4-D is be
ing applied.) (2) A pint of the
ester 2,4-D is to be applied per
acre. At least a pint per acre
should be applied regardless of
the amount of water being used,
per acre. Comparison of fields
sprayed with one pint and with
one and one-half pints of ester
2,4-D have shown equal kill. If
tarweed is the major weed and
is advanced in growth, one and
a half pints are recommended.
(3) In applying dust, 15 pounds
of a 5 percent ester dust is being
recommended. (4) Booms for
spraying or dusting should be set
at a height above the weeds for
proper coverage. All weeds should
be covered for most efficient kill.
A canvas shroud over the boom
will prevent excessive drift of
dust and spray, especially if ap
plied in a strong breeze.
Farmers who are Just now get
ting equipment in readiness for
applying 2,4-D should keep these
points in mind. There is plenty
of time to apply the 2,4-D so do
not hurry into the Job with im
proper equipment. Charts for de
termining rates of application at
different speeds with varying
spacing of nozzles and sizes by
pressure applied are available at
at this office. Drop in and talk
your spraying problems over!
Many farmers have called at
this office for information on
Mormon cricket control. A survey
of the cricket infested area by
Robert Every, extension entomol
ogist, Oregon State college, and
the County Agent was made last
Friday. It was found that the
crickets were hatching in large
numbers. The central mixing sta
tion is being completed at Board
man with baiting by bureau of
entomology planned to begin
this week.
Since conrol program funds
are short this year and the infes
tation area is much larger it will
be necessary for considerable
baiting by individuals. It is es
timated that there are 7,500 acres
of severely infested land in Mor
row county this year.
Many farmers will wish to bait
and we suggest that bait broad
casters be built or purchased by
those in infested areas. Plans for
the USDA bait broadcaster are
available at this office, as are
the addresses of companies who
sell bait broadcasters. These are
available at prices ranging from
$150 without motor to $325 with
motor.
Throw aside that seed catalog;
get busy outdoors.
You will be eating radishes out
of your own garden by latter May
if you get that early garden
planted now. ,
R. Ralph Clark, O.S.C. extension
horticulturist, has flashed the
green light. Go ahead, it is now
time to plant, barring a word to
the contrary from the weather
man. What to plant? Clark has whip
ped up an early garden recipe
suited for Oregon. If there are
four in your family, plant a 23
foot row of radish seed; 10 feet
of loltuce; 50 feet of spinach; 100
feet of peas; two dozen early cab
bage plants; three hills of rhu
barb; 12 hills of asparagus plants
and "50 onion sets.
