UNION PACIFIC PLACES
MORE ORDERS FOR DIESEL
LOCOMOTIVE UNITS
The number of diesel loeomo
tive units purchased by Union
Pacific railroad since the close
of World War II was increased
to 245 today with placement of
an order for five 2,000 horsepow
er units with Fairbanks-Morse
and Company.
G. F. Ashby, Union Pacific
president, said that the total cost
of the roller bearing heavy duty
engines was $870,000. They will
be used in helper service In
mountainous areas.
Delivery is expected before the
end of the year.
In earlier orders the railroad
purchased 70 yard switching un
its, 112 freight units, 47 passen
ger units, 5 all-purpose units, 10
heavy duty units, and 1 road
switcher.
The purchases are a part of
Mr. Ashby's $100,000,000 post
war improvement program for
Union Pacific
