Reflecting extensive engineer ing and manufacturing research in design changes and the use j of improved materials, the new i products offer marked power In creases over the models which they replace in the manufactur er's line of products. The new products include the four-cylinder "Caterpillar" Die sel D311 Engine, the "Caterpil lar" Diesel D2 track-type tractor and the "Caterpillar" Diesel No. 212 Motor Grader. The new D311 Engine, focal point of the power increases which are found in the tractor and motor grader, replaces the D3400 in the Company's line and is available as an industrial pow er unit, an electric set and a mar ine engine. It develops a max imum output, with radiator fan and full equipment, of 49 horse I power, at 1700 r.p.m. The new D2 tractor has 32 ' drawbar horsepower and 38 belt i horsepower, a 24 per cent in crease in power over the prede cessor mbdel. The new Diesel No. 212 Motor Grader, at 45 h.p., shows a 29 per cent increase in power over the previous motor grader of this size and weight. Refinements of the new engine as outlined by the manufactur er: One-quarter inch bore increase, from 3 34 inches to 4 inches, re sulting in an increase of 252 cu bic inches in piston displacement and the application of stronger connecting rods and a heavier, stronger crankshaft. Chrome plated top piston rings, increasing piston life. Divided manifolding, allowing an independent port for each valve and so improving the flow of incoming air and exhaust gas es. Larger and more efficient air cleaners, retaining the advan tages of an old bath with a swirl type precleaner. Improved oil pressure control system, assuring maintenance of proper oil pressure at the bear ings even under extreme cold weather starting. New fuel injection valve de sign with the pressure-operated valve mechanism enclosed in a copper capsule, easily replace able as a unit, with no overflow lines required. A new governor, anti-friction bearing equipped, to provide sen sitive, accurate control. By con necting the governor linkage di rectly to the fuel pump rack, excess weight is eliminated per mitting the engine to keep close ly in step with the load changes. Three tube type oil cooler mounted beside and flush with the water radiator core to pro vide more effective cooling of lubricating oil and water, to fa cilitate servicing and to simpli fy the installation of blower fans. In addition to the improved en gine both the new tractor and the new motor grader offer oth er features designed to improve performance and add longer working life. The use of the new, harder metals and better heat treatment have brought to the tractor im proved transmission, final drive and clutches. To the features of the motor grader have been add ed the advantages of power-operated mechanical controls equip ped with anti-coasting brakes to prevent creeping or coasting un der load; increased speed in all ranges of its four-speed trans mission; and an arched front ax le to provide maximum clearance.
