A Veterans' Day party at the Honolulu Army Navy USO Club
brings together Hawaii's most attractive ex-service woman, Mrs.
Esther Neptune, and Hawaii's most decorated veteran, Captain Alex
ander N. Kahapea.
Besides acting as a "bridge" for veterans returning to normal com
munity activity, USO serves the veteran by bringing USO-Camp Shows
units into veterans' and military hospitals on a regular basis,and by
scheduling parties, entertainment, and other social functions in these
hospitals.

ONE ARMED BANDITS
Pinball machines and other sim
ilar devices operated in Oregon
during the past year naa a piay oi
approximately $3S,000,000, a recent
statement of the state tax commis
sion indicates. The state's cut for
the three months just passed was
S 121.741 which has been applied to
the nublic assistance funds of the
state and counties. The state's share
was $73,045, this amount being 60
percent of the total. The remaining
40 percent. 48.696, was allocated to
ihe counties in proportion, to the
amounts they pay for public assist
ance.

Would a survey help? It might
establish that there are more real
estate agents than real estate. Ap
proximately 2000 real estate brok
ers and salesmen will have taken
the state real estate examinations
by the end of this year, according
to Real Estate Commissioner
Claude H. Murphy. The 27th ex
amination this year will be held
in Medford December 2, with oth
ers folloyving, in Salem December
4 and in Portland December 5 and
3. About 350 applicants will take
these examinations. Commissioner
Murphy left this yvtek for Atlantic
City, New Jersey, to attend the
annual convention of real estate
boards and license officials which
starts November 10.
TAX LEVIES UP $9,000,000
Substan'iial increases in tax lev
ies in virtually every county in the
state is revealed by the statement
of the state tax commission re
cently released. The levies total
553.363,058 which is a gain of 39,-
JOO.OOO over the 1945-46 fiscal year
levy. Multnomah, heaviest popula
ted county in the state, had its
levies raised from $17,811,039.08 to
10,038,031.
MARTIN ESTATE $S2,100
An inventory and appraisement
iied with the stale department this
week shows the estate of General
-wi. IT Martin. U. S. army re-
'iied, and 1'orme.r governor and
congressman, to be 562,100.25.
The widow, two sons and a
daughter are chief b. nelieiaries,
under the will, of $14,428.32 in cash
and $47,000 in stocks, bonds and
jJter securities.
VOTER PAMPHLET EXPENSIVE
The official voters' pamphlets of
the state of Oregon for the Novem
ber election cost the taxpayi rs over
$40,000. The editing of material and
inspecting of cuts jtocomplywith
the election laws, printing, address
ing and mailing ran to over $5i).0'j1
as the revenue from space bought
by candidates and proponents and
opponents of measures was only
$10,000. The printing for all coun
ties except Multnomah was dene at
the state printing plant m b.d.m.
The Multnomah county pamphlet
was done in Portland, then brought
to the capital for mailing by the
state division of elections. Approx
imately 10 percent of the pamphlets
did not reach the voters due to
change of address or death. Th se
were sent to county clerks vho
n moved the names from the regis
tration rolls.

a charge of transporting intoxicat
