News Around the Town . . .
FIRE AT BEAMER RANCH
LIGHTED COUNTRYSIDE
A fire scare was reported at the
Ralph Bearaer ranch Wednesday
evening which for a time caused
plenty of excitement. The blaze
started in the stubble near the
house and for a time it looked as
if the house might go. Fire fighters
from town responded to the call
for help and the house was saved.
Mrs. R. A. Thompson is visiting
'in Walla Walla this week at the
home of her son-in-law and daugh
ter, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Webb Jr.
Mrs. Thompson accompanied Mr.
and Mrs. R. I. Thompson Friday.
Tress McClintock spent Wednes
day on a business trip into the Ya
kima valley, visiting several points
there in the interest of his hay
stacker.

Lt. Louis Gilliam is home on ter
minal leave from his duties with
the U. S. navy in Norfolk, Va. He
is undecided as to his future plans,
but at the moment is enjoying be
ing at home with his father, Len
Gilliam and brother Don.
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Evans took
their little daughter Mary Emma to
Portland this morning to the Shrine
hosDital where the cast will be re
moved from the little girl's leg.
They were accompanied by Mrs.
Emma Evans.
Mrs. Cecil Warner was a week
end visitor at the home of her par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Barlow,
havina driven from Eugene. Besides
returning her father's automobile,
which was used for a honeymoon
trip the week before, Mrs. War
ner's visit was primarily for the
purpose of packing household ef
fects in preparation for shipment
to Eugene.
Mrs. Florence Paul has returned
to her home in Heppner after
spending the past several months
in Portland at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Riley Juday. The Judays
brought her home Saturday and re
turned to Portland on Sunday.
Len Ray, young son of Mr. and
Mrs. Leonard Schwarz had a birth
day Tuesday and some of his little
pals were invited in to duly cele
brate the event. Len Ray will be
trudging uo the school hill come
September. '
Miss Annie Hynd, Mrs. Maggie
Doney, David Hynd and E. R.
Schaffer were Pendleton business
visitors recently. It was the first
time Miss Hynd has been out for
any length of time since spraining
her ankle last fall.
Harrv Quackenbush is reported a
little better as of Wednesday. He
is still confined to his bed at the
Mattie Gentry home.
J. F. Davis spent the week-end
in Heppner with Mrs. Davis, re
turning to Cle Elum early Monday
morning.

The war department advises thatj
effective March 1, 1946, parcels not
exceeding 22 pounds in weight or
48 inches in length or 72 inches in
weight and length combined con
taining articles requested by the
addressee may be accepted for
mailing to army personnel overseas.
Personal recordings, voice or in
strumental, may now be accepted
for mailing to Army personnel ever
seas, provided they are suitably
prepared for transmission through
the mails and meet the require
ments as to weight, size and re-J
quest of the addressee. However,
such recordings in parcels not ex
ceeding 8 ounces in weight may be
accepted for mailing at the first
class rate of postage without the
specific request of the addressee.
HOME TALENT TO STRUT
STUFF FRIDAY EVENING
Everything will be in readiness at
the school gymnasium Friday eve
ning for the three one-act plays
mentioned in these columns last
week. The curtain rises on the
first play at 8 o'clock and each is
long enough to tell a complete
story.
Heppner Parent-Teacher associ
ation, the Morrow County Public
Health association and the high
school are sponsoring the entertainment.
