4 Heppner Gazette Times, December 20, 1945 EDITORIAL. , . The entire staff of the Gazette Times joins in extending greetings of the season to our many readers and in wishing for one and all not only a bountiful season but the most joyous Christmas in years. i What a Christmas this could be if the people of the world really believed in and followed the precepts set down by the Man of Galilee whose birth is commemorated each year on the 25th of December. Selfish ambitions and strife between nations would give place to peace on earth, good will towards all men, and in place of fear of the atomic bomb there would be mutual happiness from its development. It may follow that the harnessing of atomic energy will prove a boon to humanity, but with nations still jockeying for the key position in world power and our American labor situation what it is, it is difficult to face the future without a few qualms. Our fighting men knew what they were fight ing for while the war was on. Now that many of them have returned to civilian life they are not sure what it was all about. Were they fighting to give Russia all she purportedly is asking for since peace came? Were they going through the tortures of hell at $50 a month to make higher pay and shorter hours secure for those who stayed home and received the highest pay known to history? They are wondering about these and many other " things that have occurred on the home front dur ing their absence. Perhaps they can do something about it ere another Christmas comes and help bring back some of the ideals they were fighting for. In the meantime let us do what we can to give the veterans a bit of the old-time Christmas they dreamed about when too far away from home to think of getting there. Just give them their place in the family circle or social group. That's what they most desire.
