Heppner Gazette Times, November 29, 1945 5 Baridon Girl Draws KOG Essay Award First prize of a $50 war bond in the annual state-wide Keep Oregon Green achievement and essay con test was awarded to 17-year- old Meleese Young from Bandon ac cording to Charles Ogle, executive secretary of the association. Judges decided the young Coos County high school student had written the best essay in competition with 23, 000 Green Guard and in addition had one of the outstanding records of cooperation in Green Guard fire prevention work during the year. Two second place winners, Rob ert Davis, Salem and Marceline Moore, Roseburg, will receive $25 war bonds for their outstanding work in helping keep Oregon green in war bonds and stamps of $350 as Green Guards. Total cash prizes from many contestants from every will go to 38 winners, selected Oregon county. YOUNG ENSIGN WEDS IN CALIFORNIA CHTY Ensign Alvin E. Hendricson, USNR of San Leandro, Calif, and Miss Margret Burnham of Cotato, Calir. were united in marriage Nov. 18 at a white wedding in the Church of Incarnation, Santa Rosa, Calif. Ensign Hendricson is the son of Mr. and Mrs. E.. .0. Hendricson, former residents of Heppner and a grandson of Mrs. Emma Jones. While attending the University of California at Berkeley he was called into active duty in the na val reserve and after graduation was sent to Midshipmen's school in New York. He was commissioned as an Ensign in June 1944 and af' ter additional training at naval sta tions in Miami. Syracuse, Philadel phiaNorfolk and New Orleans, he was assigned to a new navy vessel proceeding to the far western Paci fic area. His vessel recently return ed to San Francisco from Japan for repairs. Alvin was born in Heppner and has visited relatives here many times during vacations. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Burnham, retired mining engineer residing in Cotati. She also attended the University of Calfornia graduating in October this year. The bride and groom first met while students in the univer sity. Alvin does not expect to be re leased from active duty for some time RETURN HOME ILL Mr. and Mrs. Blaine Isom and daughter Harriet returned Sunday evening from Portland where they spent Thanksgiving. Mr. Isom and Harriet have been ill since and have both been ia bed. EAT WASHINGTON TURKEY Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Barlow and dauhgter, Mrs. Robert Walker, spent Thanksgiving at Goldendale with Robert's parents. Miss Marie Barlow spent the day with friends in The Dalles. Mrs. Anna Bayless returneJ to her home Tuesday after spending several weeks with her son at Monument. Mrs. Bayless will return to Grant county next week.
