Rice was hostess Oct. 25 to the home economics club of the Lexington grange. About 12 ladies were present and the after noon was spent in hemming tea towels and pillow slips. Lawrence Becket, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Becket of Eightmile, has returned to the States and is at present at Fort Lewis. Lawrence has been in the service since the spring of 1942. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hughes spent Tuesday in Boardman at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Healy. Mrs. Healy is Mr. Hughes' sister. Mr. and Mrs. James Leach spent a few days here with Mrs. Leach's mother, Mrs. Letha Archer. James tried for a Blue mountain buck but had to return to Portland minus a venison supply. Mrs. Nellie G. Anderson is back on the job at the Case Furniture store after being confined to her heme with illness for a few days. Cpl Willard Blake called his wife from a California point Wednesday noon about fifteen minutes after he stepped off the plane which brought him from the Pacific area. He will receive khis discharge from the Army at the Portland Air base and return to his family in Heppner. M. L. Case returned home Sun day night from a highly successful hunting trip in the Blue mountains were he bagged himself a deer. His son, Harold and the other 'members of the party returned to their homes in the Willamette valley on Mon day. A hunting party whic has been trekking to the mountains each fall for the past five years came in Saturday with six bucks a 100 percent rating. The group includes Elmer Grifiith, Henry Peterson, Cecil Lutkins, Bill , Bosley, Dale Brown and Carl Bergstrom. Only once since the group started hunt ing together has the record not been complete. Ferguson of Gold Beach is in Heppner this week having come to go hunting with his brother, O. E. Ferguson. Earl and Len Gilliam and Ray Drake left this morning for the John Day country on their annual elk hunt. The men will be gone two weeks. La Verne VanMarter is leaving today for Portland to spend several days on business. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Batty were Heppner visitors Wednesday from their home at Monument. ( GIRL SCOUTS OBSERVE HALLOWE'EN, SCOUTU WEEK On Monday evening the members of Troop III and their leaders were hostesses for a Hallowe'en costume party at the parish house in honor of their troop committee and friends. The guests were conducted thru the chamber of horrors and some 35 girls enjoyed an evening of games and dancing topped off by the traditional refreshments cider and doughnuts. Wednesday at their regular meet ing the girls of Troop III gave 'a special program in celebration of Girl Scout Week, Oct. 28 to Nov. 3, which is being observed nationally.
